Want to get in on the fun?

Find where your community rocks -Just search on Facebook with the name of your community, city, county, or state and the term “art rocks” or “rocks”; if you don’t find a page, consider starting one yourself by doing the following:

– Create a Group Facebook:

  1. Click  in the top right of Facebook and select Create Group
  2. Select your group preferences, enter your group name, add group members and then choose the privacy setting for your group
  3. Click Create
Once you create your group, you personalize it by uploading a cover photo, adding name, and a description. This is a good time to select a #hashtag to be used on your communities Art Rocks!

– Designate at least two people as administrators for the page. Administrators manage the needs of the Facebook group by approving members and answering questions. You will need to ad more administrators as your group grows.

Create a Pinned Post Providing: Share you group guidelines and group hashtag Like #STRocks. Include rules such as no rock hiding in national parks, state parks, private property, cemeteries, etc., along with reminders for respectful interactions between group members on the Facebook page. You can check other groups for examples of guidelines. some basics about painting rocks. Purchase materials (acrylic paint, sealer, brushes) and paint colorful pictures and messages. Then hide the rock for others to find. When you find a rock of your own, you can either keep it or re-hide it.

Tips for Success

  1. Wash and dry your rocks before painting.
  2. Allow paint to dry completely before writing hashtags with permanent marker on the bottom.
  3.  Seal each rock and do not add/attach anything to the rocks
  4. Always be mindful of the environment and respectful of the community guidelines that already exist.
  5. Do not hide rocks in national parks or state parks, or on private property
  6. Remember it is meant to be fun. This is a gifting project. It is about gifting and not always expecting to find a rock or get recognition when yours is found. You may not always find rocks where they were left. Not everyone plays by the rules.
  7. If there is not a hashtag on the bottom, it is not part of the Art Rock craze. Be respectful and return it from where it was found as it may be part of a different expression of art.
  8. Invited your friends to join the craze.  Organize events where you create your rocks together.
  9. Get inspired. Pinterest and Facebook are great places to find inspiration for colorful creations and creative messages.
  10. HAVE FUN! It is about community, connection, and fun.
