Online Review Details

Taking the Baby Signing Time Online Review is an alternative method to fulfilling the ASL course requirement for the Baby Signing Time certification level. The goal of the review is to ensure that you have a basic knowledge of ASL as well of our company and our products before you begin teaching. All review questions are based on information found at SigningTime.com website, Baby Signing Time DVDs, the Academy Instructor Manual, and Wikipedia pages about ASL.

About the online review:

  • There are 41 questions about Rachel’s story, company history and Signing Time products. To review this information visit the About Us section of our website.
  • There are 100 ASL signs to identify (you have 3 choices for each sign shown)
  • There aren’t any essay questions – only multiple choice, true/false and yes/no questions
  • The review isn’t timed – take as much time as you need to read and answer questions
  • There aren’t any trick questions, but we recommend that you read each question carefully
  • You must get a minimum of 85% correct in order to meet the certification requirement
  • You can take the review up to three times

ASL Education Requirement

Because Signing Time products teach American Sign Language vocabulary words, we require Signing Time Level Instructors to have formal ASL training through accredited institutions (listed below) or through our approved on-line resource at www.signingonline.com. You can register and purchase your Start Up Kit before you complete this coursework.  We will accept transcripts for courses from any of the following institutions:

  • accredited college or university
  • community college
  • vocational school
  • university
  • high school
  • www.signingonline.com

The fastest and easiest way to meet this requirement if you have not done so already, is to complete the accredited courses at www.signingonline.com. Each course costs $79 and can be completed in as little as two weeks, sometimes less. ASL courses must be completed with a C or above, within eight years to the date of application, unless you are currently licensed and working in a professional field that relies on ASL communication. return to top

Video Guidelines

To apply for Signing Time certification, you must submit a short video that shows how you would teach key signs through songs and stories (see lists below of approved songs and books). The purpose of this video is to see how comfortable you are with signing while teaching, so we won’t be evaluating the production quality of your video or the quality of your singing voice! You don’t need to sign every word or do a full ASL interpretation of the song or story – just select a few key signs from each. Please make sure your video meets the following guidelines:

  • You can be seen clearly, from the waist up.
  • The background is a simple wall or is free from distractions.
  • Sign along to one song (from the list below), as if you were teaching a group of children
  • Sign as you read one story (from the list below), as if you were teaching a group of children

Start your video by introducing yourself, signing as much as you are able. At a minimum, fingerspell your name. Include your first name, where you live, and identify what you are going to be doing. For example: “My name is Alison. I am from Texas. I am going to sign Leah’s Farm and The Very Hungry Caterpillar for my Advanced Signing Time Instructor application.” The preferred format for video submission is links to YouTube. Find a tutorial here. If you are concerned about privacy, make sure your videos are set to “Unlisted”. Unlisted videos are only accessible to people who know the video link.

Approved songs (select ONE):

  • The Rainbow Song – Volume 6 “My Favorite Things” (Series One)
  • Leah’s Farm - Volume 7 “Leah’s Farm” (Series One)
  • Hello Backpack – Volume 13 “Welcome to School” (Series One)
  • Feelings – Volume 4 “Family, Feelings and Fun” (Series One)

Approved books (select ONE):

  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
  • If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff
  • Pete the Cat: I Love my White Shoes by Eric Litwin
  • Where’s MY T-R-U-C-K? by Karen Beaumont
