Jill G. Eversmann, MS, CCC-SLP Speech-Language Pathologist Signing Time Academy Instructor When working with toddlers and young children who are pre-verbal, minimally verbal, nonverbal, or whose speech is not intelligible, signs are often introduced to encourage speech and language skills and foster communication. From our Signing Families

Baby Signing Time Just wanted to let you know about my five-year-old, Little Brian, and how much he loves Baby Signing Time videos. He who was born with Rubenstein Taybi Syndrome. He doesn’t speak any words, but loves to move his little hands around while he watches the videos. He can sometimes make the sign for more! Last year, Brian was diagnosed with Leukemia. I quit my part-time job as our already heavy load of doctor and therapy appointments skyrocketed. We spent many months in the hospital. When no other toys could calm Brian during his painful chemo treatments, we …

That Moment – Celebrating 10 Years of the Academy

by Carissa Martos, Master Signing Time Academy Instructor, Teacher of the Deaf and Interpreter The smallest of things can change your life. In 2009, a friend sent me a single Signing Time DVD, for my then one-year-old son. He’d had two neurosurgeries and the prognosis surrounding speech wasn’t good. We’d discussed signing with him, but I admit I had no idea where to start. The little I’d tried hadn’t worked, and I was feeling dejected. As we moved into our new home, I popped the DVD into the TV upstairs, closed the baby gate, and started hauling in furniture. Later …

Baby Sign Language May Enhance Memory

One of the many cognitive benefits to your child after starting early communication with baby sign language is an enhanced memory. Research has found that associating signs and actions with words help the brain to retain a stronger memory. For example, when a child learns a word in conjunction with a sign, they are more likely to remember and understand the meaning of the word. When babies learn to sign before they even hit a year of age, they start learning to remember the actions to communicate. This helps children remember words because there is a muscle memory involved. (Teaching Sign …
