A fun way to keep your kids learning and playing ALL summer!

Published by erin under Signing Resources and Ideas

Myself and team of amazingly creative Signing Time Staff have been working feverishly on a Signing Time Summer School Packet. And trust me, I had my childhood in mind every step of the way. With every project, worksheet and activity, I had to think to myself if this was something that I would have liked to do as a rambunctious, active 9 year old. As soon as that last bell on the last day of school rang, I ran full steam ahead into my summer vacation, leaving math, reading and science projects far behind. Pet ActivityThis Summer School Packet is super kid-that-needs-a-fun-summer-vacation friendly.

Each week, we will introduce a new theme. The first weeks theme is ‘The Great Outdoors’. Under each theme, we will offer several DVD’s that feature content from that particular theme at a discounted price. For example: for the first weeks theme, I am sure you already know that Series One Volume 8 “The Great Outdoors” is featured, along with volume 7 Leah’s Farm, volume 9 Zoo Train, and Series Two volumes 4 and 5 as well. With each DVD, there will be an activity that can be downloaded. We will make edible bugs, go on make believe picnics and even do animal arithmetic! You can easily change the academic level for each activity to match all age groups and each activity will require varying degrees of adult supervision, so this is truly a family affair!

This is a fun, painless way to keep your children active and learning all summer long!

Is it Okay to Let My Baby Watch TV? Comments on article

The article, “Is it Okay to Let My Baby Watch TV”, found on www.content4reprint.com, gives some interesting insights on the disadvantages and also the benefits of educational television programs for babies.

Madeleine, the managing editor at Brillbaby, reports on the latest statistics and research about how no TV watching is better than unsupervised television watching, and adds that the American Academy of Pediatrics has advised that the under-two’s should not be allowed to watch any TV.

BUT this is the comment I found most interesting: “Many parents and teachers find, however, that high-quality educational TV programs complement interactions with their babies and facilitate learning. Robert Titzer ’s Your Baby Can Read! and Rachel de Azevedo Coleman ’s Baby Signing Time! are good examples.”

Looking through the Signing Time testimonial page, there are several parents who have commented on the benefits of introducing and watching Signing Time to their children who are at least three months old. Rachael N. said, “My son. Luke, has been watching Signing Time since he was 3 months old and now at 22 months, Luke can sign over 250 words. Through Signing Time, Luke has learned his alphabet, the days of the week, 10 colors, how to count to 10 and much more. I can’t wait until my newborn daughter is old enough to start signing with her brother!”

Many parents share this same sentiment, but I am sure there are still some who feel that early TV watching can be damaging to early education.

Here is a copy of the article that I wanted to share:

Is it Okay to Let My Baby Watch TV?

There are two schools of thought on this. One says that babies under two years of age should not be allowed to watch any TV; the other says that limited amounts of high-quality educational TV accompanied by adult interaction are fine - and may even be beneficial. When DVDs are used correctly, the repetition and familiarity they provide can actually aid learning.

Signing Time will change your life

Published by Mike under Fun Stuff

Mike's Family

One year ago I joined Signing Time as the Director of Technology and Web Marketing. I have enjoyed every minute of being involved with Signing Time so closely. In truth I feel a little lucky and amazed that the opportunity to come work for Signing Time came at the right time and the right place for me.

I have four daughters (lucky I guess ;-)) and our third daughter Madie has a genetic disorder. A few years ago we were introduced to Signing Time through some of Madie’s therapists. Madie immediately hooked onto Signing Time and absorbed it like a sponge. She previously was talking very little so Signing Time helped our family learn the basics of ASL so we could communicate with Madie.
