Myth: Signing is expensive and time-consuming

Signing does not take a lot of time or cost a bundle. The amount of time you devote to signing and the degree to which you integrate it into your family’s life is completely up to you. Granted, the more you do, the more likely you are to see results. I have seen families who use only three signs benefit from the experience. As far as the financial commitment goes, it can be as little as the cost of one paperback book. Compiling a signing library, using DVDs, or taking a class can be a lot of fun and will enhance your signing vocabulary, but they are not mandatory, especially when there are so many helpful resources online. – Dr. Jenn

Product Review by Nic: I started teaching my son to sign when he was 7 months old. He is 27 months now and knows more than 175 signs as a result of watching Signing Time exclusively. We never have communication issues because he is able to sign and clearly articulate what he wants. Thanks ST.

Myth: Sign language will delay spoken language

Because sign encourages early communication, increases vocabulary, reduces frustration, and expands expressive language, most speech experts are in favor of introducing sign to babies. According to Dr. Marilyn Agin, Lisa Geng, and Malcolm Nicholl, authors of The Late Talker, “Research indicates that signing is a stepping stone–and a very important one–on the way to speech. As the child’s ability to vocalize increases, signing falls by the way side. The signs are not an alternative to speech, but a method of helping the child discover speech.” – Dr. Jenn

Product Reviews by Paige: We received this as a gift for my son’s 2nd birthday. He has never really watched much tv, but we put this on just to see how he would react, and to my surprise, he took right to it. Now he cries whenever it is over. He wants to watch it over and over. He loves the songs and the kids. The best part is he is already signing “more” appropriately and he has been watching less than a week! I already ordered volumes 2 & 3 and I plan on getting more for my son for Christmas. Highly recommend!
