I in Sign Language
Learn how to sign the letter I in sign language!
1. Bring one hand up to about shoulder height. Extend the pinky straight up and tuck the remaining fingers into the palm of your hand.
2. This sign looks like an icicle (I for icicle)! Use this visual to help you remember the sign.
Teaching Tips:
- The letter I has two sounds – the short and long vowel sounds. Practice finding words that begin with I and sign the letter while saying the right sound for your child. I – ice-cream! Or I- igloo! (for example). With repetition, your child will learn both sounds and the corresponding sign.
- Alphabet games for kids are lots of fun! Write the letters of the alphabet in chalk on a chalk board or a sidewalk. Provide your child with a squirt gun or spray bottle. Sign a letter and when your child identifies it and signs it back to you, they get to squirt the letter with water.
