Leaf in Sign Language

Learn how to sign leaf in ASL (American Sign Language). There are many different types and colors of leaves! What kinds are around your house?

  1. Bring one hand up about shoulder height, fingers slightly extended, palm flat. If you’re using your left hand, the palm should face to the right. If you’re using your right hand, the palm should face to the left.
  2. Take your other hand and extend the pointer finger, tucking the remaining fingers into the palm. Touch the pointer finger to the middle of the palm of the first hand.
  3. Wiggle the fingers on your first hand and drift both hands down back and forth to about waist height.
  4. This sign looks like a leaf fluttering down to the ground. Use this visual to help you remember the sign.

Teaching Tips – to learn how to sign leaf in ASL

  • Interactive learning for kids is extra engaging when the learning is brought outside. Go on a leaf hunt. How many different kinds can you find in your neighborhood? How are they the same? How are they different? Practice signing leaf as you observe.
  • Do a leaf rubbing. Place your favorite leaf from your hunt under a piece of plain white paper. Take a crayon and color over it so the texture of the leaf emerges. This may work best if you remove the crayon paper and use the side of the crayon. Practice your sign for leaf after you finish!
