Mosquito in Sign Language

Learn how to sign mosquito in ASL (American Sign Language) and then avoid the little buggers at all costs!

  1. There are two different ways to sign mosquito. Option one is to first bring one hand up about chest height, palm down, fingers together.
  2. Make an f-shaped hand (pointer finger and thumb tips are touching, the rest of the fingers are outstretched)
  3. Tap the connected pointer and thumb onto the top of your first hand, then slap the first hand with the open palm of the second.
  4. When done this way, this sign looks like you are finding and slapping away a troublesome mosquito. Use this visual to help you remember the sign.
  5. Option two is to make two fists and holding one above the other, circle the top hand just under your nose.
  6. This version of the sign looks like you are showing the long nose of the mosquito. Use this visual to help you remember the sign.

  • Why do mosquitos bite? Do some research together online to find out why and how to safely avoid being bit.
  • Learning activities for children can serve several purposes at once, especially when books are involved! Here’s a multicultural idea. Find the book, “Why Mosquitos Buzz in People’s Ears”. Read this West African tale together and talk about the different modes of dress and types of animals seen in the illustrations. Practice the sign for mosquito each time the word or illustration appears in the book too!
