Pay Attention in Sign Language

Learn how to sign pay attention in ASL (American Sign Language) – it’s a helpful one in classroom and behavior management!

  1. Bring both hands up to either side of your head. Keep the hands flat and the palms facing one another.
  2. Circle the hands back in small circles a couple of times.
  3. This sign looks like you are directing someone to pay attention. Use this visual to help you remember the sign.

Teaching Tips – to learn how to sign pay attention in ASL

  • This is a helpful sign to practice several times in a controlled environment before using it on the fly. Review both the sign and the meaning and ask children to tell you what it means to pay attention, and what it looks like to pay attention. For instance, eye contact, still hands, quiet mouths all might show you are paying attention.
  • Use sign language to help with all area of classroom management. Once pay attention is mastered, you can add in things like “sit down”, “stand up”, “share”, “my turn/your turn”, etc.
