Teaching Tips – to learn how to sign plate in ASL

  • As soon as your child can safely carry dishes, teach him to set the table. Start by working together to move dishes and practice the signs. Transition to cuing with sign and having him choose the correct item to bring next to the table. You can start with plastic plates if that seems safer!
  • Mealtimes are a great time to facilitate interactive learning for kids. Teach your child what a healthy plate looks like (half veggies and fruit, ¼ carbs, ¼ protein is often the recommendation). Offering a variety of healthy choices, assist your child in creating their own healthy plate for meals or snack time. Talk about what’s on the plate together and sign plate!
