Potty in Sign Language

Learn how to sign potty in ASL (American Sign Language). You get to practice this sign so many times a day!

  1. Curl your fingers down into the palm of your hand and tuck the thumb up so it sticks out between the pointer and middle finger. This is also the sign for the letter T!
  2. Shake your T-shaped hand back and forth a couple of times.
  3. This sign is like you are jiggling a potty handle… or T for toilet! Use these cues to help you remember the sign.

Teaching Tips – to learn how to sign potty in ASL

  • Sign language with babies helps them learn about the world around them, even before they are ready to try a new skill. Begin teaching this sign by modeling yourself, even long before a child is ready to be potty trained. You know you’re likely to have some company in the bathroom anyway. As you go about your business, talk to your child and say, “I am going potty!” Sign to support the concept. Eventually your child will want to try too – both the sign and the big kid skill of using the potty!
  • Be sure to check out our Potty Time program and get our free downloads of steps for going potty. Signing potty and using our program makes potty training fun (and often easier!)
