Sheep in Sign Language
Learn how to sign sheep in ASL (American Sign Language) – what are ways their wool helps keep us warm?
- Hold one arm in front of you, palm down and hand relaxed.
- With your other hand, extend the pointer and middle finger and tuck the remaining fingers into the palm.
- Turn the hand upside down so the top of the hand rests on the first arm.
- Making cutting motions by opening and closing your middle and pointer finger on the second hand, bringing it up the other arm.
- This sign looks like you are shearing a sheep! The first arm is the back of the sheep and the second shows the shearing motion of the scissors! Use this visual to help you remember the sign.
Teaching Tips – to learn how to sign sheep in ASL
- Sheep are a favorite farm animal! Using books or a visit to a real farm, find out what their job is (to provide wool, food, milk) and why people raise them. Sign sheep as you learn.
- Art games for children are lots of fun. Draw the outline of a sheep then let your child fill it in by gluing cotton balls down for the sheep’s wool. Encourage her to sign sheep and even say “baa-baa!” as she creates.
