U in Sign Language

Learn how to sign the letter U in ASL.

1. Hold your pointer and middle finger straight up and press them together. Tuck the remaining fingers into the palm of the hand.
2. This sign looks like the handle of an umbrella. U for umbrella. Use this visual to help you remember the sign.

Teaching Tips:

  • Create art activities that teach! Go outside and draw letters of the alphabet in chalk on the sidewalk or a safe driveway. Practice signing, including the letter U, as you go.
  • The letter U is at the beginning of many words. Brainstorm a list of U-words with your child and sign U as you come up with each. Older children can also distinguish between the long and short vowel sounds that U makes.
