OK guys I am not really sure if I need to be worried but what do you all think, this is whats going on. Vincent is now 27 months old now and seems to now having problems with words that he used to say just fine. And the more the word is said the worse it sounds. He is not combining (sp) words yet unless i couch he through it and he is really not gaining many new words lately. I am taking him for a hear test Aug 9th to make sure everything is ok but should I worry or what. On top of that bc he is not able to get everything out and he is not wanting to sign he is getting mad a lot and I really dont know what to do. If and one can help let me know thanks.

Sounds like you are taking the right first step. Get his hearing checked. He may have water on the ear or an infection that is causing the problem. If that comes back clear I would get a speech evaluation done. The state offers a program through EI. Ask your doctor about it.
Good luck. I'm clickable if you want to e-mail me.

I would agree that you are on the right track and I would also recomend the speech eval. Try to remember that while you don't have to make yourself sick with worry, but do trust our instinct. If you feel something could be wrong talk to your doctors and be persistant, you are his voice rigth now.

I definitely don't want to barge in. I am very new to this forum. However, as a pediatrician and the mother of a child with a speech delay, I felt I had to respond somehow. Sometimes kids get bored with skills they have mastered and don't show them off as frequently, but truly losing a milestone is a really big concern. Make sure that your doctor is aware of the extent of your concern. Notice if there are any other changes in his behavior or skills and point those out, too. Sometimes, when kids are quiet or shy with the doctor, it's hard for us to really get a picture of what they're doing and how they're progressing. At this age, they should be picking up new words at a rate of 1-3 per week and combinations should be coming more readily even without coaching. I think it's great that you've picked this up so quickly.

Hi I'm a speech path. It would be difficult to diagnose without actually seeing your little guy in person but I agree early intervention is critical. What you describe as not being able to pronounce /s/ blends "sp" words is developmentally appropriate. What I am curious about is the regression of a developmental milestone. We always rule out hearing and vision before we even
accept a referral. A speech/language evaluation would provide answers to some of your questions and they're fun. At his age we do play based assessments. I typically include moms unless the child gets too silly or shy with mom around. Gloria

Thank you Thank you for everyones help, we are really looking into this now because last night he was trying to tell me all done and the more he said it the worse it got. I have the number for First Steps here in Missouri that i will be giving a call and my Parent Educator, with parents as teachers, was told what was going on and going to be helping me out even more. Again thank you and I will keep you all posted on how he is doing.

Ok so the test they did for hearing came back norm, but bc of the speech thing going on for so long she wants me to take him to a speech path at childrens mercy and a neurologist. After talking for a while with her I had to stop and think about other things like him falling more and how many words he really knows know. And we guess he know about 60 words that he can speak and about 103 words in sign so anyways we are making those appt and then going from there. She said sometimes at this age they can do a roller coster thing and hit a bump in the road and then they get better but she was glad we came in and doubled checked everything since he was talking so well before. SO thats it for now, he is being to quiet so talk to you all soon :o

Maria,
Thanks for keeping us updated. I think about Vincent and what you posted from time to time. I hope it does turn out to be a "bump in the [learning] road - you are a really aware and astute mom to catch the changes so quickly.
ST! hugs while you wait!

Hi I am the grandmother of a 2 year old boy who was diagnosed with apraxia (among other things - sensory, motor and oral delays). My daughter had him evaluated at 18 months old because of his speech delay and his other issues. He doesn't have as much verbal communication, but now knows how to sign pretty well. The signing cut his frustration level in more than half! Thank God for Signing Time! He sometimes knows a verbal word, but looses it. He now receives ST (2x a week), OT (1x a week) and a Cognitive teacher (1x a week). We receive these services through Early Intervention. He is on a waiting list for speech 2 more times a week. He understands everything you say, but this is a neurological condition that has him unable to verbally communicate at this point. He is improving (slowly!). We are so blessed with this angel and his big brother (who is 5 and very articulate!). I would contact your local Early Intervention to help!
