I create this thread as a place to put suggestions and non-intential technical happenings (aka bugs), so that users can share their experiences with the ST folks and the ST folks can do what they do: make things better and better!
Obviously, these are just comments and suggestions to be acted upon or not as deemed appropriate by the wonderful folks at ST.

Sometimes I find myself reading a post and want to reply and the "Post" button is missing. Usually when I go to a post from the New Posts screen. I can still post by using the "Quote" button but if I didn't want to quote, I then need to delete the quote.

You know I thought the same thing too, but the POST REPLY button is only at the top and bottom and all the post are in between. So if you read something and want to post then you scroll up or down to click POST REPLY.

Sometimes the "go to first unread" button is missing and sometimes I click it and it takes me to the wrong post.
Is there a way we can have a image of the months with the number of posts each month listed like the yahoo site does? I like seeing how busy each month is and how much we are growing as a group.
I know someone said there is a chat option on this forum but I haven't stumbled across it yet. Anyone seen it? When will the chats move over here? I haven't been able to get into the yahoo chats from my computer for months and I am having withdrawl. I miss chats!!
We need a links section so we can transfer the links from yahoo here.
Thanks

When you read about the member list this is what it says:
The member list contains a complete list of all the registered members of this forum. You can view the member list ordered alphabetically by username, by the date that the member joined the forum, or by the number of posts the members have made.
How do you view by date joined? It lists it as one of the options but I don't see where you can do that.
I am curious about the different types of members. I know who the super moderator is and I understand administrator and moderator but what is the difference between members and junior members? Is it based on the number of posts the person has contributed or it is based on the amount of time they have been a member?

I'm so excited to see that ST has switched from the yahoo group to a board. :)
My question: What, if any, are the size limits on pictures in signatures? I am using an image that is OK on another board powered by vBulletin, but want to check that the size is OK here.
Also, I have two suggestions for forums. I think that it would be useful to have a forum devoted to technical questions, rather than just a thread. Also, I think it would be good to have a forum for introductions rather than having them all on one huge thread. Just my two cents. Overall, I'm thrilled to see the format change.

You know I thought the same thing too, but the POST REPLY button is only at the top and bottom and all the post are in between. So if you read something and want to post then you scroll up or down to click POST REPLY.
I know that is true in Linear mode, but in threaded mode, it is sometimes not avail. at all.

I am curious too. I just became a "Member" I don't know how or what it means. Is it because I post so much? (I just had to see the new avatars? :D ) Or is it my history on the yahoo site? And does this mean I get a pass or presumptive pass from the Moderators?

Hi all,
I tend to be email-driven, so I subscribed to almost all of the threads (perhaps my downfall...). What I have observed is that as soon as I open an email about just one of the threads, over on the forum board view, all of a sudden, everything shows as having been read.
Don't know if I'm making sense. For instance, the General Discussion Forum that had the color coding (red/orange, I think) went back to blue (along with everything else), even though the email I had opened related to the How Do You Sign forum. In fact, I hadn't even read it or clicked on any links within it (my email is yahoo-based, if that matters). I had done this as a test, because I was confused as to what was clearing out my settings.
Is there some setting in my profile that I'm missing? I guess I'll unsubscribe to the forums, and see if the thread subscription (which I have set to automatic when I post) does the same thing.
Sorry so long-winded. I'm actually very computer literate, so this is a bit frustrating. I'm sure I'll get it soon. Any tips or explanations in the meantime would be most welcome.

I find where I can subscribe to forums, but not how to unsubscribe. How dense is that? Could someone kindly give me a push in the right direction? *sigh*

Okay, all,
I tend to read forums & threads chronologically. I noticed that a Reply does not pick up the subject or title from the thread itself. For those who read in a different order, does quoting the previous message help, or matter (or distract) when you are trying to read through messages?
Actually, do we have some sort of "Netiquette" guide somewhere on the forum? Other than the "don't..." rules?
Just wondering.

Congratulations on your "promotion", Andrea!! Perhaps if I keep it up I'll earn my stripes too :D Or do I lose points for all of my technical questions  LOL. Good to see you here, Andrea!

Andrea - to get a picture in your signature, first you need to set up a photobucket (or similar) account so that your pictures reside online. I don't know how the other services might work, but once a picture is loaded into your photobucket account, there are 3 lines below it with different types of links. Since this board is vbulletin, you will want to select the text in the first link and copy it (ctrl + c).
Then come back to this board. Look in the red header bar for QuickLinks, and select Edit Signature. (The quicklinks link seems to be available on many pages, but not when you are reading posts. It's on this reply page as I type and is on the main forum pages that list threads.) Once you're on the Edit Signature page, you'll have the same sort of text box that you do when making a post. Click the little mountain icon in the toolbar. Use ctrl + v to paste your link into the dialog box. When you do preview signature, you should be able to see your picture. Then save signature. You can also add other text before saving your sig.
When you make posts, if you scroll down below the text box, you'll see an orange bar labelled Additional Options. The "Show your signature" box should automatically be checked.

It helps me to have at least part of a message quoted, so I know which reply is being referred to.
"Netiquette" guide So far there's the Online Rules of Conduct which was in the user agreement when you registered.
how to unsubscribe Heh heh... I just had to look on FAQs myself for that one... and then I had to walk myself through it .... twice! to 'get' it. LOL... Ok... here's what I found~ Go to your User Control Panel and click on subscriptions. You should have a list of the threads you subscribe to. You'll see Thread/Thread Starter, Last Post, and Notification. In the Notification column you have check boxes, check the boxes of the threads you no longer wish to subscribe to, then use the drop down box at the bottom of your subscribed list and make your selection there and then click 'go'.
all of a sudden, everything shows as having been read. I haven't quite figured that one out either.

Thanks for posting this. You did an excellent job of describing the steps. I am still figuring out the pictures but with your help I got a photo into my signature line.
Anyone up to describing how to do a custom avatar? I can't seem to get this option to work yet.

all of a sudden, everything shows as having been read.
Somewhere, I can't find where right now, someone mentioned that if you stay logged in to the forum too long (say dd wakes up from nap and draws you away for a bit), all gets marked as read automatically. That *might* fit, I'll have to see when I have time to experiment (and enough patience to then try to figure out what really hadn't been read). If that is true, then maybe someone technical can find out where/how to turn that off... since most of us are parents, interrupt mode is often a given, and losing those markers of where you left off is like having 30 bookmarks fall out of your favorite 6-inch-thick reference book :( !
So, if anyone can shed light... and I'll "report back" after testing, perhaps tomorrow I'd have time.
Take care, all!

That has not been working for me and I'm not sure why. I just log into a forum and the thread titles that are in bold have new posts (usually). Once inside a "bolded" thread, I click on "View First Unread" in the orange box on the left. There are other ways -- this just seems to be working the most accurately for me right now.

New threads also have an open envelope icon in the left column. Old threads have a closed envelope icon. Be sure to log in so that your new threads are accurate.
Once you get to the bottom of a thread, you can click on Previous Thread to get to the next oldest thread on that forum. Keep reading until you get to one that doesn't have "View first unread" and you should have seen all the new posts in that forum.

When I log in I go right to 'new posts' and check everything through that(which I love!) but my request would be this: I click on a post and read the new messages and then click on new posts again to go to the next...I want that one I just read gone from the list. It's not new anymore and somedays when I only have a chace to check once a day(or less) there are pages of posts that I have to scroll through to find where I am at. Understand?

Some posts are still not coming up. I am finding entire threads that have been around for days and I've never seen them before, and I check New Posts every time I come.
Also, the screen is often half or fully filled with "How do I sign" posts. It would really be great if we could organize that area so that every word is not a new thread.

go to User CP
click on Edit Options (under Settings & Options in the Control Panel bar)
scroll down to Thread Display Options
set it to Show All Threads
hit Save Changes
now no threads disappear
when you are in General Signing Time Discussion a thread you want may not be on the first page...right now there are 5 pages you can look through

Log into your photobucket account and above the picture you'll see three buttons~ Move, Edit and Delete
Click Edit and you can choose to make the pic either 75%, 50% or 25% of the original. Once you change the size, you cannot change it back to the original size. When I'm resizing through photobucket, I start at 75% and work my way down.
By the way, I LOVE the picture you have!

Sounds like you left the "Remember me" box checked one of the times that you logged in. That information gets stored in some obscure MS Windows location  -- if you want to get rid of it, someone else probably knows where to hunt it down & remove.
Don't panic, though, you still can let someone else log in by doing the following:
When you get the confirmation that you are logged out, don't close that browser window. Just click on "Go to forums index" (or any other option). The browser "remembers" that you logged out for that window only.
BTW, if the "log out" doesn't even work in the first place, go to the FAQ (red tool bar) and search on "log in". It gives a link that should clear cookies & log you out, as well as directions to manually clear if that doesn't work.
Hope that helps. Have a fabulous weekend!!

Just a quick question. I have subscribed to a couple of the forums and put the daily update on all of them. However, this is the only one I ever get an e-mail from. Is it because the others aren't being posted to? I'm in the BST one, and a couple of others that I got an e-mail when I first subscribed but I've never gotten one to the BST nor have a gotten one from the others for quite some time. Am I missing something?

There are a lot of different icons in main forum page... red, blue, and yellow envelopes, envelopes that are open or closed, with arrows pointing this way and that. Some message titles are bold, some are not... What does it all mean? I couldn't find any information in the FAQs. Is there somewhere else to look?

Hi all,
I put a poll in the ST Playgroups thread that I started. People voted, voting time has expired, poll is closed. We have data - great! I wanted to add a new poll that lists several February* playdate options, but I can't get rid of the old poll  (or edit it, if that is what is appropriate). The FAQ was of no use (at least not what I found). HELPPP! I don't really want to have to delete or start a new thread, and lose the existing postings by the Ohio folks.
I guess if I can't solve it, I do a poll-only thread & delete the entire thread (assuming I can do that) when we're done with it. That way I can leave the orginal one alone. Let me know if anyone has a better solution.
TIA, and have a very Happy New Year!
* footnote: I went ahead & picked a random date in January to get us going, but I'd like to allow more input for future Playdates...

Okay, now I'm not getting ANY new e-mail updates! It used to be that I would just get an update for this forum (though I was subscribed to 3 others as well) and now I'm not even getting THIS one. Erica,
I posted this in answer to your question on the BST forum. Don't know if you saw it/tried it & it didn't work, or missed seeing it.
... First of all, subscriptions to Forums (main categories, like "Baby Signing Time") and to Threads (categories within a thread, like "No E-Mail Coming Through") allow you to subscribe with a choice of "no email notification". Sounds a bit goofy, but think of the concept more like favorites/bookmarks for your browser - you get the idea.
FORUMS:
On the red toolbar, click on User CP. If you're subscribed to any forums, that will be listed on the right side of the window, underneath a list of "New Subscribed Threads". If you want to UNsubscribe, you can do it there. If you want to change the type of notification (choices are no/daily/weekly), you have to go to the actual forum itself, & from "Forum Tools" (in red bar, next to orange bar titled "Threads in Forum...") select the "subscribe to this forum [yeah, I know, you're already subscribed...] and make your selection.
THREADS:
On the red toolbar, click on User CP (if you're not already there). On the left-hand side panel (titled "Control Panel"), select "List Subscriptions". The "Notification" column most likely says "None" (=no email notification option). You can fix this right here. Use the check boxes to select which ones you want to change. At the very bottom, in a green bar, there is a drop down box which includes the notification options (no/instant/daily/weekly). It's NOT obvious, because the default contents reads "Move to folder...".
YOUR PERSONAL PREFERENCE for the future:
On the red toolbar, click on User CP (if you're not already there). On the left-hand side panel (titled "Control Panel"), select "Edit Options". As you scroll through the options, you will find a section (green bar "Messaging & Notification"). You have the option of setting "Default Thread Subscription Mode". Change to your preference. Don't forget the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the page!
Well, looks like I rambled in great detail once again. Please let me know if this turns out to be helpful.... Good luck!
Let me know if it works!

Log into your photobucket account and above the picture you'll see three buttons~ Move, Edit and Delete
Click Edit and you can choose to make the pic either 75%, 50% or 25% of the original. Once you change the size, you cannot change it back to the original size. When I'm resizing through photobucket, I start at 75% and work my way down.

when you are looking at your photo album you see your pictures with 3 different codes under them Url, Tag, Img
to insert an image from photobucket just copy the Img code and paste it here...you can preview your post before you hit submit to make sure it worked and is the size you want

Chris-
Thank you SO much for the info! I didn't see it on the BST forum. Since I don't get daily e-mails I usually forget to check it. :)
Well, I tried it and I don't think it's going to work. I went into that UserCP and it shows me as subscribed. Then I go into the forum itself, change my notification to Daily E-mail Updates, go out, come back in and it says "No Notification" (or e-mail, or whatever :) ) I can't get it to stay on daily e-mail. *sigh* I'll keep searching. ;)

Give it a day or 2. As far as I can tell, the change does indeed work, but the place where you go set it always defaults back to "No Notification". It should work, there is just no way to verify it (other than wait :( ).
Humor me & do the setting a final time (just to be sure that when you went back to 'check', you didn't hit "Add Subscription" by mistake while it still said "No Notification"), and give it a few days. It really should work.

The forum settings allow you set how far back you want to go in terms of thread age. I don't know what the "Forum Default" is, but if you want to show older messages/threads, do the following:
Under the red toolbar (at top, starts User CP FAQ ...) use the
"Quick Links" pull down menu, select
"Edit Options", go to
"Default Thread Age Cut Off" and set to what you want.
(I personally set mine to "Show all threads" because I'm always looking for something I saw posted eons ago...)

Can anyone help? I uploaded a picture of Sophie, and I have it showing on my picture profile. I can't figure out how to get it to show up when I post something. Thakns!
Cute Picture of your Sophie!!! :p Your "Profile Picture" is just there for when people look up "gran2sophie" in the memberlist, though. What you're really wanting to do is add a "Signature" and include the picture (image).
I did a quick search, and there is an older post that will help you.
HTH
In case you don't know, Photobucket (which is referenced in the thread) is at http://www.photobucket.com .

I did a search and didn't find anything about this so I thought I'd ask. Sorry if I just missed it somewhere!
Sometimes when I click on the link to a thread in my e-mail it shows me a "view first unread" button. Other times it doesn't. Even on the same thread that I KNOW I've seen before. I've also had it show up on something I didn't think I'd seen and when I click on it, it takes me to the first post.
Any hints on what I may (or may not) be doing right?

I'm having trouble chatting. When I tried to log in, it wouldn't recognize my username and password. Then I thought maybe I forgot my password so I clicked the button for 'forgot password' and when I entered my login name and email address it said that I didn't exist as a registered user :( Do you have to register to chat separately from the forums?
Then I clicked cancel and suddenly I was in the chat. I could read the messages, but didn't see any links or fields to type a message, it was as if my screen didn't refresh all the way. I'm using Internet Explore on a Mac (OSX) -- any chance that the chat isn't compatible. I also tried using Safari browser but had the same trouble. HMmmmm....

Is there a way I can alter the amount of time I have to read posts? Sometimes if I take too long to compose a reply, and then click on "New Posts," everything is marked read and I miss the new stuff . . .
Or if I run down the hall to get a glass of water and forget to log off first . . .

The chat room and the forums do not share the same user registration information...so you can't use your forums login to get into chat...you need to register in the chatroom in order to be able to login there (tho there is no reason you can't create a new user name and password in chat that is the same as your forums'....). Hi there, I posted this awhile ago but just tested it again tonight. I'm having trouble chatting on my iMac. I tried using the following browsers: Internet Explorer 5.2, Safari 1.0.3, and Firefox 1.0.7. IE and Safari don't work at all. Firefox actually seems to work, but the page doesn't refresh smoothly or as frequently as when I'm on a PC. I have OS 10.2 (not the latest version of OS 10, so that could be the problem). I also don't think that I have the latest version of each of these browsers, but I think they are the latest versions that this OS will support.
Anyway, I thought I'd post this issue here in case TLH wanted to check it out and do some testing on different OS and Browsers in the future, or perhaps post the minimim requirements for chat on the forum for other users. If this is posted already please forgive me :)
Fortunately for me, my work laptop is a PC so I can use it for chatting.
I have no problem posting/reading the Forums on my ol' iMac. Hopefully I'll get a new iMac soon with the latest and greatest OS and browsers :)

I am on an ibook with OS 10.4 and it works, so it must be your os....I can use safari, I haven't tried with the others though.
I believe there is an issue with some OS X versions of OS that relates to java, upgrading your OS will fix this problem.
Hope this helps! :)

Considering I upgraded my iBook at Xmas, but was having issues prior, I would say it's definately the OS that you are running. DH got me OS X Tiger for Christmas and everything runs so much smoother. So, I would say either upgrade the OS, or if you've had that one for sometime, upgrade the computer. I love Macs! There are a lot of great products out there. HTH!

The difference between a jr member and a member is simply in the total numbers of posts a person has made. Once you reach a certain number of posts (I think it is 50) you automatically get bumped to "member" status.
Ok, so to delete a post - first of all it has to be your post - you can't delete someone elses. Go to the post and see the blue button at the bottom of that post where it says "Edit" ? Click that and then you can select to delete the post (or edit it if you so desire).
I hope that helps!
If you have other questions email me at karen@signingtime.com!

the difference between a junior member and a member is only the number of times someone has posted...as your post count goes up your title automatically changes
i don't think members can delete a post...only moderators/administrators...but you can edit posts you have made my clicking the EDIT button at the bottom right of your post

Bill, you don't have to leave, most forums only let the moderators delete posts. Maybe you could PM one of the moderators, explain which posts you don't like, and he/she can help you out.
Edit: Another alternative is to click on the edit button and erase everything you wrote in the post.
But you are welcome here regardless :-)

Hi,
Can someone tell me how the time zones on these Forums are calculated? I set my profile for Eastern US (I'm in Maine) when I signed up for the Forums, but things I post show up with a time an hour earlier than it really is here.
Not critical, I'm just curious.

Check the following:
Go to http://www.signingtime.com/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions
Scroll down to Date&Time where you set it to EST (= GMT +5 hours, I believe)
Look at the DST Correction Option: setting. Be sure it is set to "Automatically detect DST settings" if that is appropriate to your locale. (or, always off/on if that is how your town works).
My guess is that will fix it for you.

Hi! I'm so frustrated because I keep trying to chat and it's not working out. It may be our provider in which case my husband already said we could switch:) I have dial up People PC just in case that makes a difference or anybody knows of a problem using that.
MY PROBLEM IS - when I log onto chat I see the message that the person has just wrote. Then it repeats itself over and over and over again. I can post a message to the chat room but can't continue to chat. Any suggestions or help available would be GREATLY appreciated.
Hope to see everybody tonight.

Stef,
We missed you last night!! :( Can you share which operating system (Windows XP, Mac OS, Linux, etc.) and browser (Internet Explorer, Foxfire, etc.) that you are using? Your symptoms don't sound familiar to me, but perhaps someone else. Since the problem seems unique, perhaps it is your provider.
Anyone else use People PC? Anyone else have these same symptoms (ever before or now)? We want our Study Buddy Stef to be able to join us in chat!! :p

I missed everybody last night!!!!! We have Internet Explorer and Windows XP. However, last night I went to my work and used that comptuer, which uses DSL. And I couldn't log on. So I really don't know what the problem is. Also I forgot to mention when I do log on I don't' have any of the signs next to my name - the ear and the pause sign (I forget what they are). Any help would be great. I love the forum, ST and am working on Lifeprint and really want to benefit from the chats. Sorry to ramble I just hope that SOMEBODY CAN HELP ME!!!!!!! Thanks for any help.

ST! LeeAnn or Admin, can you check out her chatroom id / set up? Stef's now tried two different PCs and internet connections. Perhaps her id (also stefwvu, I believe) needs to be deleted and re-created or something? We didn't even see any attempts last night..

Since we have quite a few new forum members (yay! welcome!) and a couple have asked how to add the signature picutres, I thought I'd do a re-post for everyone.
HTH
In case you don't know, Photobucket (which is referenced in the thread) is at http://www.photobucket.com .

Frustrating... sometimes, I will go on the forum and there will be a bunch of new material there... I will click on and read a bunch, then next thing I know, all the posts are blue and marked as read.
I just found the same thing when I was online, and checking the posts... then took 20 minutes away to put my son down, returned to the computer and they're all marked read now (and no one is here to do that).
Any idea why this could be happening (kinda randomly?)

I have this happen sometimes too and also find it very frustrating. It always leaves me feeling like I am missing out on the most recent news.
I think I've found a way to get around it. I hit "New Posts" only one time, at the beginning of the session. Then I navigate by reading a post, and then hitting the back button until I get to the original list. That way if I get interrupted partway through, I still have the long list. I just can't tell which ones on the list I've actually read--but people are pretty good at putting memorable titles on threads, and I try to start with the earliest one on the list and go backwards.
If there's more than one page, I know I have to read fast, so I can get to the other page of threads before the server decides I've been on long enough to have read whatever I was going to read.
Hope that helps,
jojo

At first it was huge. Then I changed it to a thumbnail - but my middle one said nobody could see her - so tried to make it a bit larger. Maybe one day I can figure out how to make a cool one like yours! :p

:) Most people are familiar with Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific time zones. The United States actually has two more time zones, ALA - Alaska which is one hour behind the Pacific Time Zone and HAW - which is Hawaii - two hours behind the Pacific Time Zone.

In terms of Avatars, the general Avatars are available to anyone. The more you post, you change member status, therefore you have access to more avatars. Personal Avatars (ie your pic) are availalbe to the Moderators and such :( , unfortunately.
Hope that helps!

I used my paint program to resize my pic too. I had trouble figuring it out, but after some frustration finally got it. Also, before saving it to photobucket you can try to right click on your pic and click on "save as" down the bottom before you save it you can choose to save at 25% or thumbnail. I had better luck with the paint prog. though.
Good luck - she sure is a cutie! :p

Sign up for an account on Flickr (www.flickr.com). I believe the free account automatically creates different sizes of each photo from square thumbnail up to full resolution.

This is wierd. My signature pictures have become huge once more. They were the size I needed for about 2 weeks and now they are back to being way too big. Has anyone encountered this before and how do I fix it? It has a mind of its own :o

:o I am trying to beef up my profile with a picture of my dd.
I did the photobucket thing. Then I transferred the image to my profile using the URL. The picture showed up, but when I clicked save, it said there was an error and I can't figure out what the error is.
Can anyone help me? I am just computer savvy enough to be dangerous and impress my computer challenged husband  !
So, please be specific, or I might remain in the dark.
Thanks :D

The new series is wonderful! Do they have plans to make little books of the stories that are on the DVD? Or one great big book when the series is finished?
My little one would love to have the story in physical form so she can "read" it herself. I would too, actually.

I used to be able to see others' signature images, as well as mine. Now I just see the code.
What's changed?
Still using BBC code, no? Mine appears to be ok & my settings don't have images blocked or anything, so what gives?
I loved seeing everyone's kiddos signing :D
Oh--and is would you be willing to add avatar privileges? I know Rachel has one--what is she a celebrity, or something?! ;)
