So last night my dh came home from work, (he is a police detective) and tells me this story of his day:

There was a deaf woman in the court clerks office, and no one in the office could communicate with her. Someone there came up with the idea of getting my dh. They know he knows "some" ASL, due to Abby. What they didn't know is how little he knows.

However, that little bit made a world of a difference to this woman. My dh was able to tell her, "Im a cop/det." and "know little sign" He thought this woman was going to jump over the desk and kiss him. LOL
Between his little knowledge of asl, and her ability to read lips, they were able to fill out the proper paperwork that she needed.

He felt good about himself, that he was able to "just barely" help her. But at the same time, he realized that he could have helped her more, had he paid attention more at home, watched more ST videos!:D

So last night every time I signed to Abby, he wanted me to repeat it slower, explain, etc. He also asked me tons of questions about the Deaf culture. I am no expert myself, but him asking questions about a culture, something that interests me, and benifits Abby as well all of us, made me feel good. And I was able to answer to some of his questions.

This morning Abby and dh were watching tv, and there was a commercial on, it showed some "latest-hottest" coffee maker. Abby signed "home, coffee". He woke me up this am signing, "Mommy, coffee" LOL He was so proud of himself

I don't think I have to convince him of the benifits of purchasing the new videos and books! (Yeah!)

I agree, even with just a little ASL, it makes such a big difference to be able to communicate with someone who is deaf. So glad he watched enough of ST to be able to help. And just think, now he'll be watching them more with you and Abby! :D

I've had more than one deaf person approach me at the playgrounds or malls and ask if my kids are deaf. Being able to reply to them (albeit very minimally) still amazes me! And as Rachel stated on the DVD's, being able to sign "friend" and "play" makes a huge difference to a deaf child!
