My nephew has picked up some signs from his day care. When he signs "thank you" he kisses his hand, like he's about to blow a kiss. It's adorable!

Do your kids have any signs with extra "personality" thrown in?

Probably too many to count! My little Jacob has always had an adorable sign for Grandma and Grandpa. He just keeps bouncing his hand foward, over and over, sometimes until it hits the ground. Too cute.

Daniel does this too! :D

Daniel does "bear" like I do when I show him. He adds a growl. Makes it easier to tell if he is trying to sign bear or love! And when we do "hot", we exaggerate and drawl out the "h" sound at the beginning.

Imani signs fish and smacks pursed lips in a little fish sound.

Well, this is from a long time ago when Jonathan was little. It shows that he intuitively knew about how to create emphasis in ASL.

I was out. Jonathan signed more to DH. (Not knowing much ASL, this basically was used to mean food). Then Jonathan headed toward the kitchen. DH didn't follow fast enough, so Jonathan re-appeared around the end of the breakfast bar, and slammed his finger into his palm. MORE NOW. DH found it humorous to be yelled at in sign.

Ian and Aidan kiss(ed) their "Thank You's" too. Aidan is at that stage where many signs look alike. Anyway, for Grandma, it pretty much looks like Thank You, but he says "mmmm-ma."

Corbin woke up from his nap in a VERY grumpy mood this afternoon. Asked him why he was such a grump today, and he responded with 2 hands up to his face signing grumpy and his face was scrunched up like a wilted mushroom, lol. He meant it I guess, lol.

My son, Jacob, now almost 3, signs DON'T LIKE as LIKE and then he throws it so hard and far away that there's no mistaking that he doesn't like whatever he's referring to!!!

When Sophie was younger (before she learned to voice 'please'), she used to sign "please" with both hands (on her tummy). The more she wanted it, the faster & more furiously she would rub, occasionally even bunching up her shirt. Quite cute, especially with the appropriate pleading expression on her face!

Hard to say, 'No', of course...

Chris--

My kids would do that too. It's just too cute. They would also sign "more, more, more" in a progressively desperate way.

When Alexandria signs "bear" she has her hands in position to sign "baby" but scratches her elbows rather than scratching at the shoulders as one normally signs "bear."

Lucy figured out real quickly that signing PLEASE went farther than just saying it. She would make the sweetest face and sign PLEASE but her little voice said "PWease!" :D So precious, how can you say no?

Yes, and therein lies the problem isn't it? We carelessly teach our children this so-called "magic word", only to find that the word does, in fact, work magic upon us. ;) Imani has figured out that she can knock down almost any resistance to something she wants with those quick circles around the chest, saying "pease? pease?"

Sophie got a snowman nightlight for Christmas. Yesterday she proudly pointed to its nose & signed "carrot" (always signed with a loud sound that is supposed to be like a carrot crunching). I was so positive in my response, that she went to get Dad & show him. In her enthusiasm in signing to her Dad, she actually bit her own index finger like a carrot. Ow!!

Zoe signs 'cat by throwing her arms way out to the side and saying 'meow' over and over. Doggie is many, many pats on the hip and lots of 'woof, woof's' thrown in. I think all of her signs are done with gusto. Not a single one is done 'gently'. I think it's a sign of her personality peeking through! uh oh! And those 'please's', how can you resist!

Oh, and when she wants to watch ST and we aren't responding fast enough, she signs 'more', says 'tiki' (TV) along with the 'play' sign for the theme song, she will pick up the dvd case and bring it to us and sign 'please'!

Sophie has wanted a dog since as long as I can remember, she even asked Santa 2 years in a row. Well last year we started researching a companion dog for her. When we found the right place they told us to wait untill she is 5, so she will better be able to handle the dog. So we explained this to her and ever since whenever she signs dog she signs 5. Her teachers have asked me several times if we have 5 dogs. :p

Yes, thankfully she is 5 in May! I have never seen a child look so forward to something.

So, after all of her campaigning, does she get five dogs for her birthday?? I mean, she's waited soooo looongg, and how can you resist such a cute face? :D And, besides, May is the 5th month....

Kidding, of course. ;) Actually, don't know how you've held out so long.

I think we'll start with one, although I am going alone with her to pick the dog up and go through training for 2 weeks so who knows! :)

When my 3yo was younger & wanted to leave where we were he'd sign "car". Now when my 14 mo wants to go he signs "hat", lol! They're so cute. :)

Alli signs and says "Bye Bye" when she wants to leave somewhere-which definitely is hard to mistake.

I wish I could sign Bye Bye whenever I wanted to leave a place! Or when someone is bugging me at work, just sign Bye Bye and they would leave!

We can learn a lot from these kids!
