Does anybody remember the adolescent book My Darling, My Hamburger, by Paul Zindel? After I learned the sign for MARRIAGE and HAMBURGER (looks like MARRIAGE and then flip it, right?), I wondered if there was some connection, but I couldn't find anything, so I guess it's just a coincidence?

Well, anyway, it helps me remember the signs . . .

I hadn't thought of the signs that way. Hmmm. That would be a good way to describe them though, if someone was familiar with one and not the other.

I was just thinking the other day how marriage & hamburger were similar. :D Kinda like pancake & cook.

Funny to see this...last weekend I was at a picnic and an interpreter was relaying a story to me about how she teachers an ASL class and when they were assigned to sign to each other in class and introduce themselves and tell about their lives, one lady signed hamburger for husband. The interpreter corrected her. Several weeks later, they were leaving for class and the lady said she had to hurry home to her "hamburger". It became a running joke the rest of class and now I will never forget these signs either!

This came up at my signing playgroup! What is the difference? On one site I found that they are exactly the same (just context different) and another said to do one with palm up first then switch and the other was palm down first then switch...cant remember which was which!

Context is everything... There are many signs in ASL that have the same sign or with subtle subtle differences, and we shouldn't flinch... English is the same (or worse!).

This about reading or saying the following English words:
-bear/bare
-hair/hare
-threw/through
-run/run/run/run/run (tons of meanings... think about it)
-new/knew
-no/know

-sooooo many more examples... (but I'm running out the door... think of some more).

The best way to remember is that Hamburger is signed just like the movement needed when making a hamburger pattie, you pass it back and forth between your hands trying to shape it.

Also, most people sign Married by making a small circle with your dominant hand before it rests into your non-dom hand.

Hope that helps!
