After teaching the sign for "mother" in Silent Night, I always teach the sign for "father" just as an FYI... and I've never been asked this in 6 years, until Thursday... what's the sign for step-mom or step-dad? Thanks in advance for helping!!

Using an "L" handshape with the dominate hand, twist the hand towards the body. Then follow with the sign for "mother", "father", "brother", "sister", "son", or "daughter"
I learned this sign on the video called "I Want to Learn Sign Language" vol 2.
They showed the number 2 twisted with the dominant hand, followed by Mother or Father. Meaning "Second Mother".
That video btw, is perfect for following Vol 1-6 of ST. includes holidays, coins, sports, and in general, is great. Skip Vol 1 as it is the ABC's, and very boring compared to ST.
Good Luck

One of my Deaf friends uses the I love you hand shape where you would normally put the five hand shape for mom or dad. As far as the siblings part I have no clue.

That is really sweet. I had learned to sign FALSE in place of step. So you would be signing FALSE+MOTHER for step-mom. I always thought that was sort of negative, and so I didn't share it.

I have seen the SECOND MOM done, and that is fairly well understood, but more often I have seen S-T-E-P MOM signed (fingerspell STEP and then sign MOTHER).

We have seen both of these where I live.
