We have school that day. The girls really enjoyed their little 6 week break from school over the summer because they got to spend the morning watching PBS shows they had never seen before. I decided that 6 weeks straight of nothing but Signing Time! (even though I love it) would drive me nuts! Now they watch Sesame Street when we are home during the day, which doesn't happen much.

Noggin shows "Play with me Sesame" and Daniel see it occasionally. I grew up watching Sesame Street, but I wasn't too thrilled when Daniel started eating like Cookie Monster!

I'd like to tell you it's just a phase... Henry did this big time, and mainly for the laughs. Now we have to seriously tell him that Cookie Monster is being silly, and that's not polite... that's not how big boys eat... when you eat like a bog boy, you may have cookies, when you eat like a silly CM, then you may not have cookies.... etc.

(PS... not just reserved for cookies... feel free to substitue almost any food item in there where it says cookies above: cheese, crackers, waffle.... you get the picture!! )

Yeah... don't go there... :) We had a HUGE Elmo discussion here last spring (I think it was last spring...)... I don't know if the thread is still around on the back pages somewhere....

Basically, I can't stand Elmo, and I don't understand the appeal. The third person talking is soo annoying and NOT a good model for these highly impressionable little sponges. Bring back Grover, I say!! ;)

Clara has a book, Elmo gets a Checkup, or something like that. It's actually not a bad book about going to the doctor and getting a checkup. She loves it. I can't read it as written though. Elmo talking in the 3rd person bugs me too much, so I just change it :-) I think they should bring a speech therapist on the show to teach Elmo the word "I."

Cheryl! I totally do that, too!!! I like that book (we collected a bunch of books last winter when Henry was getting ready for his surgery)... I HAVE to read it in the first person. Henry hasn't busted me yet, but he'll be reading soon and then the jig might be up!! haha

I always assumed the reason for the third person was that very young toddlers do often refer to themselves in the third person, and that Elmo is supposed to be a very young child (although not a baby like Curly Bear or Baby Natasha).

Having said that, Elmo's sentence structure doesn't exactly match his third person construction!

Well, if they bring in a ST for Elmo, they might as well sign up Cookie Monster ("Me lost me cookie at the disco.") and Baby Bear who can't pronounce his "r"s yet! Just kidding - I think it is cute. They can't be any worse of a role model than parents. Parents constantly talk in the third person, "Daddy has to go to work now." etc. lol. Ernie is still my favorite!! :p

I used to LOVE Sesame Street, but it is so watered down now, I can't watch it. Joe never watched it much because I never thought it was worth it, which makes me sad.

I can remember in the late 70's, learning to sign "butterfly" with Linda... :D & to say "water" in Spanish with Luis. Good times!

I can't stand Elmo!

Elmo is the hero in our house - my daughter loves him so much!

It's a big pity, I can't see Bob's deaf niece - I'd love to see the sesame street characters sign.
(In Germany we've got our own Sesame Street, no Bob there.)

My daughter learned all the names just these days and it's so funny she says Bad Bird, instead of Big Bird :p ...
