Hi all,

We will be having our after school sign language group put on a small performance at our variety show.
What I would like to do is have a couple of children state (via voice and sign) about deaf culture. Any thoughts about what should be said? After the statements we will then do a signing time song.

I don't know enough about deaf culture. But what I would love to know if I were in the audience would be a statement about those of us who know some sign but not much, when we encounter a person in the world, on the street, in a store who is deaf and signing, is deaf culture more like latin american culture which welcomes contact (greetings, small talk, the sort of see-I-know-some-of-your-language-too that my girlfriend and I get all the time when we are out and about talking in Spanish), or more like French culture which disapproves of the intrusion on privacy of casual contact and is highly critical of imperfect use of the language.

Or to put it more simply, tell your audience "If you encounter another signer out there, sign (a) HI or (b) ignore them just as most strangers ignore each other.

facts out..

Like ASL is #__ language in the world.

__ people are deaf/hard of hearing or better yet

____ people use ASL to communicate.

what about using ASL for non verbal/hearing people?

Just want to get some facts out to the school community. We are a bilingual school (spanish/english).

I can tell you that:
ASL is the third most used language in the United States behind English (#1) and Spanish (#2).

1 in 1000 people are born Deaf/Hard of Hearing.

Other than those two things, I can't thing of anything else off the top of my head, but I hope those two little facts help.

You may want to also look at the Signing Time Press Kit (http://www.signingtime.com/pressroom/) . It has lots of great information.

No, you can advise them to say hi if they feel comfortable... not always have to ignore... but depends on the situation...
