My son and I watched "A Land Before Time", it was an ASL edition. Linda Bove was signing in the corner. We both LOVED it. I got online to see what other movies we could watch. I can't find any!! Can this be??

Small children can't read close-captioning and even if they could read some they couldn't read fast enough. What does a deaf child do??

Does anyone know?? I want to watch signed movies!!

They aren't movies, but if you go to the "Between the Lions" website, you can get several stories from the series captioned in ASL (and several other formats) for download. My daughter loves these, and will happily sign along with the "Click, Clack, MOO, Click clack MOO, Clickity Clack MOO" part even when she sees a non-signed version of the story now. (I wish they'd sign the stories on the broadcast version-it would be really cool).

Oh, and don't rule out closed captioning too soon. Many of the children on this group have been early readers. Signing, and especially fingerspelling, really seems to help make that text-word connection early, which makes sense to me-it's got to be hard for the phonics sounds to really connect when a child can't yet produce them himself and therefore doesn't really hear the word sounded out (my 2 yr old's spoken version of play sounds like kay, for example)-but the signed version of PLAY looks like PLAY.

Thanks for the tip! I downloaded "Click, Clack, Moo" right away because we love that story.

I am so amazed that there are no movies in sign language. I can't imagine not having had "Lady and the Tramp" when my oldest was 2........that was the only time I could relax and take a power nap ;)

I can't wait to download the other two stories - I just wish they had more!

I do too-I keep hoping they'll add more units to the site, but nothing yet. It would be really nice if Disney would ASL caption some of their DVDs. I know a few people who have had children who have learned some of a foreign language by (after practically memorizing Cinderella or whatever the favorite movie is), changing the language on the DVD to French or Spanish. I'll bet we could have a lot of Signing kids that way, and it would be great for Deaf, pre-literate children.

Leah loved watching movies no matter what! Being deaf, she is very visual and even before she could read the captions- she just loved watching. Usually I would watch it the first time with her and interpret and answer whatever questions she had. We always kept the captions or subtitles on even before she could read all of those words. Now, even Aaron and I prefer the captions on when we watch tv or movies.

And as a young deaf child her favorites were not necessarily the ones that were signed, like The Land Before Time or the ones where Linda Bove acts and signs Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks. We bought an entire series that has deaf signers telling stories and Leah still preferred Disney flicks with no signs.

For Leah it was more about real shows with real expression. At age 3 she loved Labyrinth and would perform David Bowie's songs and dances from it! Leah in a diaper, singing into a wooden spoon, tossing her baby doll in the air. I've gotta say I prefered watching HER!

even though Kayla can hear we watch whatever we can with captions I think it is an amazing tool for her to be able to see what the words look like. she is VERY verbal for her age.and i think thats a big part of it.

I know some of the Wiggles DVDs actually have an interpreter in the corner dressed up as a Wiggle and signing. I do not know which ones specifically, but I know they exist.

The Wiggles are from Australia, so isn't the signing done in Australian Sign Language?

Like I said, have never seen that particular one, but I just did a search. There are at least 2 DVDs and it is an American Sign Language interpreter that is used, not Australian.

HTH!
