ASL FOR FAMILIES
LESSON # 22
Loan Signs

Summary of Lesson
*Languages, when in frequent contact with other languages, borrow words from each other.
*When one language lacks a word for something, often language users will borrow a word for that object or action from another language, primarily one that is a dominant language in the culture where they live.
*English borrows many words from Latin and French.
*The borrowed words are changed to fit the rules of the borrowing language.
*The same is true of ASL. ASL is in contact with English so ASL borrows many words from English and modifies them to fit within the rules of ASL by making them look like signs.
*These words that have been borrowed from English are called loan signs.

Grammatical Principles
*Loan signs are fingerspelled words that appear as if they are signs.
*Some of the letters are skipped, and some of the loan signs have movements to show directionality or spatial meaning.
*Loan signs are indicated by the number symbol (#). This indicates the word itself is a loan sign.
