My oldest son has bilateral mild to moderate hearing loss. My second son, it seems to me, talks very loudly much of the time. He is capable of talking at a normal volume, but it seems like when they are playing his voice often stands out above the others. I don't notice this with my 3rd DS.

I'm just wondering if anyone else finds that siblings of HOH children talk more loudly than usual. I'm wondering if Benjamin somehow learned to compensate for his brother's hearing loss by speaking louder. However, Nicholas doesn't necessarily do this. What have others found?

I don't know about sibilings of HOH. My one daughter (22 months) is Deaf, and her twin doesn't seem to understand that just yet. However, in my husband's family there are several HOH people, including his father. My mother-in-law sure seems to yell a lot and to speak loudly in general. I don't know if this is in response to living with several HOH people for years or if she was always that way.

I don't know about siblings of HOH either, but my husband's father is HOH, and my husband will converse painfully (to me) loudly for half and hour or more after he's been talking with his dad on the phone or after we've gone out to eat. I don't know if that's helpful . . .

Thanks for the replies! It is interesting to hear that others have family members that change their volume of speaking due to a HOH person in the family. It really makes sense.

Maybe I should work with Benjamin on lowering his pitch because Jonathan hears better at lower frequencies. Then Benjamin wouldn't have to use his loud, shrill voice that grates on my nerves.
