hyperlexia- what is it?
I read a bit on the web, but does anyone here have a child with it? Can anyone spread some hope/stories so I can pass along to my friend.
thanks.

My 11 year old nephew has hyperlexia. I don't know about hope, I mean, like hope that it will go away? That's not our story. Taylor has moderate-severe autism. He is verbal, but no experessive except for the hyperlexia. He imitates things people say, and recites everything that he reads; he's really good at calculating numbers, reading/writing, but he doesn't do any of this comprehensively. (((())) Taylor fixates on certain things and certain people- and he's very loving to those things/people. We love him to death, though we pray that we can see him "with us" someday. I'm sure someone will come along with a better story for you.

Janel, My daughter is now 22 and she was diagnosed hyperlexic when she was about 4 and leter on diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome which is a form of high-functioning autism. Any type of social interaction is her biggest weakness. She doesn't pick up on typical social cues. These kids have to be taught the things that typical kids "just know". Unfortunately for my daughter, those kinds of things weren't really available when she was younger. I can suggest to the parents that they role-play a lot and try to remember they have to specifically teach most things. My daughter is a neat kid but definitely quirky :) People either love her or they can't stand her, not much in between :)
