Paula has severe SNHL. She's only been signing for a little under 3 months (but WOW is she doing great!), and only had her aids for about a month.

My question: is BST appropriate for a kid like her? When I watched the tapes, it looked to me like they might be a little too visually busy and have too much background sound for her to make the connections between the sign, word and meaning. That's something I like a lot about Vols 1-3: the meanings are clear and the vocals are easy to distinguish. (We're waiting to see if we can get EI Clearinghouse money to buy Vols 4-6)

What do all you die-hard BST fans say?

and is sometimes overwhelmed by busy and loud things. I LOVE BST - but then again - Brady loves music and there is a lot of music in BST. I think that the BST kids - the ones who sign on the pastel background, do a good job of reinforcing the signs that Rachel presents. I do love BST because Rachel is so animated and makes signing so fun. Brady still likes the other volumes, but he likes excited Rachel more than serious Rachel - if that makes sense? We love all things ST! so I guess we're a bit biased LOL

You know Paula best, what she likes and what she doesn't, so you're probably the best one to make the call - but - I think that BST does a great job presenting the signs, reinforcing them, and making it fun fun fun at the same time!

My twins are about the same age as your little one, and they love BST. Cassia is Deaf, and Alexandria is hearing. They both have had a language explosion with BST, and I believe it is because the DVDs are geared to children their age. There is repetition ad nauseum in BST, which is perfect for teaching a young child. My kids love to watch ST, but they actually sign along with BST.

Considering that Paula does LOVE to dance and loves anything energetic, I think BST would probably be great for her. So it goes on the wish list :) I think I'll start a change jar for saving up for ST products, and when my hubby offers to stop off to pick me up some Starbucks, I'll tell him to put the money in the jar instead :P

My youngest Sophia is now 14 months old this month and is HOH. We started signing with her and using BST! with her in mid-February. She has had a language explosion with her signing! It is so incredible to watch and her speech is slowly getting up to where it should be! BST! and ST! were probably the best things for her. And the music is unbeatable. She stops and smiles at the moment she hears a ST!/BST! song.

Paula's definitely out of baby mode, but ST! did help (and me) her make a lot of progress in sign language. She was diagnosed late (19 mo), and at that time had the speech/language of an 8-mo baby.

Last month (10 months post-dx) she scored between 30 and 36 months on the SKI-HI language test geared specifically toward deaf/hoh children.

Paula's speech is coming along, but as far as signing she is at least totally caught up and even advanced in some areas. So stick with the signing and whatever ST! you like. It really does make a difference!

I think the beauty of these videos is that it helps deaf/HH/hearing kids and adults. I would say borrow a BST from someone first and see how your darling does with it. If she enjoys it, then by all means, invest the money. As someone stated before, you know your child. If she really likes to dance, then she's gonna love this stuffs! My daughter absolutely LOVES the diaper dance!

Your local library might also have BST (or be able to get it for you through inter-library loan).
