Do any of you have a child or know someone taking Speech Thearpy.
Our little boy takes it at school twice a week.
I was wondering what activities they do with your child/children to encourage speech

My best friend is a school Speech Therapist. She siad that the Therapist should have contacted you to let you know what activities they would be doing at school so you can reinforce them at home. SHe suggested calling the school and asking for a meeting with the Speech Therapist so you can find out what they are doing. Each child will have a different plan and activities while in Speech Therapy so it is not a set answer what they would be doing.

He's received Speech since he was a yr old. He's currently in kindergarten and has Speech 3x a week. She plays games with him, and works on articulation, pacing, recognition, labeling, eye contact, things like that.
Sometimes it may take a little time for your child to become used to his speech therapist, and it may be a bit of experimenting with different techniques to find what works best. With William, he's very good at imitating, and sometimes he needs a subtle cue- point to the mouth shape you're trying to get him to copy. Fingerspelling a word helps him form the right sounds of a word too (I can't even begin to tell you how much that has helped with his apraxia!). His Speech therapist has seen how effective using sign with a picture system really locks things in for him. Sometimes she takes a Thomas the Tank Engine matching game and uses that in therapy: She'll ask him to find a certain engine or color, and when he finds it, she'll place it on a PECS (picture exchange communication system) strip with "I See ____" and has him sign and say "I See a Red Train" or "I See James" and then he can match it up. Really, I think he feels like it's play time when he sees her~ and the benefits of the reinforcement & ideas are great.

Hi! I'm a speech path so i may be able to answer some more specific ?'s. I totally agree that the speech path at school should be in touch with you & you need to collaborate on his treatment.
How old is your son? What does he *need* from speech therapy?

I forgot to mention that William's Speech therapist also had me come in for some of the sessions with William last year so she could show me and have me involved with her therapy with him. It was really informative.

My daughter's speech improved so much from the time we contacted the regional center until we finally got her assesment (months and months later) that she does not qualify for services. :)
She is still low normal for her age range. Are their some home speech therapy tasks you speech therapists, or those with experience with speech therapy can recommend that a layperson can practice with a "self directed" (previously identified as oppositional) toddler? And would it be better for her babysitter to do these exercises than her mother? (Everything between she and I seems to be a struggle these days but she is an angel for her sitter.)

Our litttle boy is 5 and has had Speech Therapy since he was 3. His teacher has given us things to do at home but, we were wondering if there is other fun activities we can do to promote more speech from him.
