I'm kinda sad....my almost 2 1/2 yr old doesn't seem to be very interested in signing anymore. He has speech delay but has been making huge progress...during this progress I have noticed he has dropped the sign and replaced it with the word...granted his speech is still not understandable to us but he doesn't seem to want to sign.

I know I haven't been watching ST very lately...he seems to have a facination with Bob the Builder and a show called Noddy. I also haven't been as consistant with signing too.

Is anyone else going through this or has gone through it?

William goes through this too. As he became verbal, he would drop signs. Then when there'd be a new volume of Signing Time, he'd pick up the signing big time for awhile, then his clarity on those words would improve and he'd drop the signs. So between the release of 2 & 3 and then last Dec's 4,5,& 6, we experienced a dry spell of signing. He would sign some things during that time, especially when he wasn't clear in his words.. I would ask him to clear it up w/a sign: "Mommy doesn't understand what you're saying. Could you please show me the sign to help me understand?". After 4,5 &6 came out last year, he signed more, but mainly at home rather than at school. I have noticed that since the school learned to sign for the Signing Time event, he has kept it up too, and I just got his report card today and it says he is using many words and signs in the classroom.

I realized, too, that when I wasn't signing consistently, he wasn't either.

Sophie (hearing) slowed down on using signs as her speech got clearer, we used it less, and, during the summer months, ceased to have regular contact with my dh's adult deaf cousin (Joy). It is clear that she remembers/knows the signs, since she 'resurrects' them when needed. What has helped us:

ST videos (we all need a break from those from time to time!)
ST Playgroup / interaction with other kids who use sign (even a little bit of it)
'Silent sign' at home - I try to do at least one sentance/request in sign & have her reply in kind daily
Renewed weekly interaction with Joy (not something everyone has)
Me & my dh using sign as we speak (hard to remember, but good practice for all!)

I'm betting that there are a lot of fun activities that others have as ideas - even some of the suggestions for playgroup activities could be done at home.

I also realize that not everyone is as enthused as I am -- I am really motivated by the desire for Sophie to continue to communicate fluently with Joy. Anyone have other things they use to keep the signs "flowing" so to speak?

Alli has been dropping signs as she learns the words, which means that often she's less clear than she was a few weeks ago (which B word is Ba, anyway? She uses it for about 5 different things, the latest being "Bottle" instead of signing MILK). So, right now, she sort of speaks "signlish" where she'll combined signed and spoken words into sentences.

"Signlish"... I love it!! (or, since you're a music teacher, is it also "Singlish"?) :p
