Cassia took her first independent step on Friday. Lately, she has been cruising on just about anything sturdy enough to bear her weight--and some things that weren't. We were in the doctor's office because Cassia had been running a fever. She was cruising along the exam table and decided to walk to the chair that was just out of reach. :D We are all so excited!
Cassia is hypotonic, and so her legs tend to spread apart easily. (They call it 'frog legs.') Her physical therapist recommended something called Hip Helpers about a month ago. They look like a little pair of bicycle shorts with the legs sewn together. After she started using them she started crawling, and cruising became much easier for her. If anyone is interested I bought a pair at www.hiphelpers.com. I just can't believe how well this has worked for her.

Go Cassia GO! And Mom, life as you know it is probably over - no more "safety" in her immobility! LOL Good luck to your family!

Cassia has a twin sister, Alexandria, who started climbing about a year ago. They already help each other get into everything. Cassia's role has been becoming more and more active as she has become more mobile. A good portion of Cassia's physical therapy has been dedicated to teaching her to go up and down stairs because she would get so sad when Alexandria would go where she could not. Alexandria loves to climb up the stairs, get into the full rolls of toilet paper, and throw them down the stairs to Cassia, who is waiting to shread them. In case you were wondering, we have changed how we store our TP. ;)
Ha! The t.p. episode is pretty funny! They're working well as a team already. . . I'll bet you can't wait to see what they'll do as teens! Are they going to borrow your clothes faster than you can wash them? . . . or will they work as a team to keep the clothes they borrow all washed up so you'll wind up going to the closet one day and wondering why that new blouse is wearing out so quickly? . . . <grins>
Ahh . . . cool stuff!

We used these to get Brady to cruise too :) Like Cassia, Brady has hypotonia (very common with DS). Congrats on the first steps - she'll be walking everywhere before you know it - then you'll really be in trouble/heaven :) WTG Cassia!!!!
