A few days ago Carson (16 months) and I were in the Wal-Mart electronics department surrounded by routers, cd players, and speaker systems--and he started signing "bike." I cocked my head to one side and started trying to figure out what he could mean.

He doesn't have a bike, and I've only used the sign a time or two (about a month ago) when we were visiting cousins who happened to be riding bikes when we drove up.

So I wondered if maybe he meant something else, or if he might mean that something in the electronics department looked like a bike.

He kept looking over my shoulder, so I looked behind me at the cd players, and didn't see any that had a picture of, say, a bicyclist enjoying a non-skip cd player . . .

I looked at the ceiling to think and what do you think I saw--bicycles hanging from the ceiling!

I think it's just so neat that Signing Time teaches Carson vocabulary that we haven't actually taught him ourselves yet. I also love that we're getting an early taste of what we've heard so many other parents talk about . . . that kids help us adults to pay a little closer attention to all sorts of thing--including the ceiling!

Alli's done that to me too-she'll notice something that I hadn't even thought of in that context. My favorite was "BALL" after seeing a snowman lawn ornament in Target. She's right...he IS a ball.

She absolutely amazed the volunteers who were in the library for training yesterday, because she would name each of the animals (various large stuffed ones). It was neat to hear the mutterings of "Is she really signing? I didn't know babies did that? How old is she again...." etc. Meanwhile, Alli is happily telling me about "CAT, TREE, UP!" (Yes, there is a TIGER in that TREE!") and "BEAR MOMMY BABY".

We also had Alexandria signing "BIKE" in Walmart. Usually when she signs something I let her play with it, and she was very disappointed when I didn't let her play with all of those bikes (that were WAY too big for her to use.) In Costco she started signing "CAR" and sure enough there was one of those little cars for children to ride. She seems to see so much more than I do all around her.
