Hi!

We have wood floors, and I'm embarrased to say that I tend to foget to vacuum the two small carpeted rooms. Anyway, the vacuum cleaner never used to bother Carson, but in the last month, I guess he forgot about it? Maybe it's been longer since he heard it, since I usually take him to daycare while I do any serious cleaning.

Anyway, he flipped his lid when Dad started vacuuming tonight. After a couple of minutes, he settled down, but he is still nervously eyeing the thing. I'd like to teach him the sign for "vacuum cleaner" (maybe it would help him) but at ASLPro I can only find "vacuum." I thought maybe that was the wrong word.

Does anybody know whether there's a sign or if it's fingerspelled?

Thank you!

ASL Browser shows signs for both vacuum and vacuum cleaner. I always end up signing "sweep floor" when I vacuum.

I learned the sign for vacuum as pantomiming using it. Grab an imaginary handle and go back and forth.

Wow! Lots of differences! I think all these differences are interesting . . . I wish I had more time just to study . . . especially regional differences in languages (both English and ASL). If I had time, I would love to be a word geek.

When I was little, I remember our 2nd grade class used to get a little newspaper called "Weekly Reader." I remember reading for the first time about different words for Hoagie, soda, etc. I was hooked!

I never could figure out how to make a career out of it, but if I could, I would. :)

Does anybody know any other signs for vacuum cleaner? I'm curious now . . .

I think my favorite so far is "clean noise."

:-)

Well, my nephew was a little freaked out by the vacuum and called it "making a noise" when his mom would clean with it - so clean noise became our sign LOL!
