Hi all! We've not been signing a ton :o much to my own disappointment, as Siobhan gets more & more verbal. However, in September, she started daycare & got her first double ear infection of the season. the fluid has STILL not resolved, she's been infected 3x & became an official candidate for tubes.
I knew her hearing wasn't great, with all of the "huh?" and "what???" I was getting. We took her for her ENT consultation & they have an audiologist on site. Siobhan's hearing levels were at 50-60 db! She's got a moderate hearing loss from all of the fluid. We've been signing more & more with her & it's definitely easing frustrations on all sides. thank goodness for all of those hours with signing time!!! :D

Isn't it great when you find out you can do something about a problem your child has? And I love the communicaion that opens up with signing!

When I took ASL as my foreign language in college, I had no idea that 14 years later I would be blessed with a Deaf daughter. I if had, I certainly would have kept up with my signing better! It is amazing how life gives you what you need in advance.

But the best blessing is that, when confronted by signing children (for whatever reason they may sign), our children will not be frightened or intimidated - even if they haven't "kept up with their signing", it will ne normal to them and their experience may serve to make signing children feel less isolated.

Aww shucks! I am glad that other people share my blessing view - I am so glad when my child sees a signing person (adult or child!) and can immediately begin a conversation with them - she has gotten many surprised and thrilled Deaf people involved in her life through random chance!
