or stringing of signs - I know this is not really ASL (except the individual signs) - but - I think that Brady might not grasp the gist of actual ASL sentence structure (not sure I'm there yet either). But - I want him to start stringing more words together, because I know that if he can sign them, he will start to SAY them :)

Thanks!

And even then, it wasn't until William was ready that he began doing this. Using PECS at school has helped him with sentences though. His speech therapist uses the PECS and signs along with the pictures.
At home, we started not giving in to his one word requests in order to increase his sentence use. Instead of responding to "Thristy" (which he'll say and sign) we'll say, "Oh, you're thirsty, wow, what would you like?" and he's learned he had to start replying, "Milk please" or "want milk please" in order to get us to move towards what he wants. We've expanded it now to have him ask, "May I have ____ please". It was just a matter of being consistent on our part. Which isn't always easy when his siblings are so wrapped around his finger they just want to respond to 'crackers please' instead of 'May I have more crackers please?' And it doesn't always have to be an entirely verbal request... he can and will add or substitute the signs with the words and that's perfect for me.

BTW, I LOVE your siggy picture! I love looking at your beautiful family and so jealous that you have one with all of you in it! I need to get my gang altogether for a professional family portrait sometime soon.

which you are perfectly capable of using yourself ;) So - let's see a pic of the beautiful Malone clan soon!!!!

Thanks for the advice - Brady's ST is using PECS sentences with him too - which he can read all on his lonesome ;) It was funny because yesterday he was at his session, he put a "gorilla" in the what he wants section and signed 'I want a gorilla please" :) I LOVED it :)

I am a sign language interpreter in the primary grades. Of course, this is something we do with the students every day. When the student asks for something or tells me something using just one or two signs, I will acknowledge that I understand, then model the sentence and ask the student to copy that. It works well!

How do you sign "May I?"

Same sign used for can~ Move both S hands, palms facing down in a downward movement simultaneously. Then we have William point to himself for I.

Our ASL dictionary says to do a double movement for May, but the ASL browser shows it as a single movement, which is what we were taught.

Trich, I'm not sure what you are asking. Can you ask again?

As far as the double movement on CAN, that means more like possible.
