My 15 month old has a lovey called "Jiffy". It is a small giraffe blanket. I want a sign for it. I don't want to sign "giraffe", but maybe something using a "J". Any thoughts?

Hi Teresa Jo!

If you want something with "J", how about making the sign for blanket, but with a "j" hand shape?

If you do blanket like on BST, you could flip the "j" down my your wrist, and then bring the pinky up to your shoulder. (Hope that made sense!)

Looking forward to what others suggest! :)

That is the joy of homesigns. Make it familiar to your little one so he can use it easily...doesn't matter if it is exactly ASL correct, but that he can communicate it to the family!

Good Luck!

I have been thinking about this still and yesterday just decided to spell out his lovey's name, "Jiffy". Daniel watched me so intently as I did. I guess he has been wanting a sign for him. I'm curious as to how he will translate my fingerspelling into his version of the sign.

Alli has decided to sign DRAGON with one hand for her stuffed dragon, but with two hands for DRAGONs in books or on TV (I saw her signing one day and discovered that there was an ad for Dragon Tales Live on-yep, there was a dragon there!). I guess the one handed sign lets her hang on to him while she does it.

Cute little girl, 24 inches of green, scaly lizard...I guess you can never predict what they'll pick.
