View Full Version : Where would you like Rachel to come to...

Admin

Ok, we need to separate out the thread a bit - where Rachel is scheduled to be, vs where you'd like her to come. I'm creating this thread as a place to hold your request. I can make NO PROMISES whatsoever...but I can assure you these are read!

Thanks!

Of course I'd love to have her back here in Charlemont, MA anytime she wants.

Our Springfield pbs station carries Signing Time so it'd be cool to have some outreach activity throughout Western MA. I'd have to see what kind of kids' events are coming up in this part of the state.

I would like her to come to the Newark, DE / Elkton, MD area. Both the Philadelphia station (for delaware) and Baltimore pbs station (for maryland) carry ST!

I would be more than happy to be a point of contact/"Community Leader" if you came to the area.

Philadelphia or Baltimore would also work.

***** Ok, after I posted this I found out that even though I located the PBS station on our local DirecTV listings for my area I can't access it. :( Major bummer. It's there, I just can't get to it. I'll never trust my listings again. *****

I think St. Peters Missouri would be a great place to come. We are only 30 minutes from downtown St. Louis. My daughters school would love to have you visit them.

Thanks and hope to see you here one day soon.

We would love to have the ST cast come anywhere near Harrisburg, PA...anywhere within about 4 hours driving time. Mady started watching ST when she was about 10 months old and LOVES it...it has helped be able to have playdates with DHH children because they can use simple signs to play and she learns when she is there too.

I would also love the opportunity to help in any way that I could...even 4 hours away.

We are working on getting ST on our local PBS station too...so if you live in the Harriburg area and you get PBS...WITF (channel 33)....please help us by writing into them to get ST on the air!!!

Columbus, Ohio would be a great stop for her! It's right in the heart of the midwest. And, being in the center of Ohio, Coumbus is an easy drive from either Cincinnati or Cleveland.

While they may not be posting on the Signing Time! forums, I know that there are hundreds of fans in this area. We are working hard to get ST! on PBS here and I'm sure a visit from Rachel would seal the deal.

Woo hoo! I support that!! Don't forget Toledo (one of our ST playgroup members, Arika, & her family travels down from there). And, since it is centrally located, we can draw from Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, West Virginia... The more I think about it... :D LOL.

Memphis, TN! With the Memphis Oral School getting so much press, it's hard for parents to connect with their signing children, so anything which would help parents meet each other and discover the joy of signing would be great. We have a wonderful public library with a great events room which would be a great place for the event, and I know that the Kindermusik educators would help in getting the word out to our parents, since even those of us who don't know enough ASL to teach Sign and Sing think signing is wonderful, and I've converted most of them to being ST fans!

And, ST could meet Elvis on location...well, maybe not-but there's a lot of great music-industry related things to do here, plus an awesome zoo and a great children's museum.

I've got to jump on the Ohio bandwagon. I once read that Columbus, Ohio is an 8 hour drive from 80 percent of the US population. We could get a lot of people here in a hurry. There are even non-stop flights from SLC to Columbus everyday!

Columbus is home to many corporations that could support a ST event here! We have long been considered a great test market since we represent a typical American city!

Columbus is home to the Ohio School for the Deaf, the Columbus Hearing Impaired Program and the Franklin County Program, the Regional Infant Hearing Impaired Program, a deaf retirement community known as The Colony and other childcare centers, elementary, middle and high schools that incorporate ASL into their educational programs. The Ohio State University and Columbus State also offer ASL courses. There are lots of people signing here in Ohio!

Ohio could certainly make the Signing Time crew proud! Just let us know when you are headed our way and we'll have a crowd of fans waiting for you!

I know I'm repeating myself but San Francisco, San Francisco, San Francisco. Or Oakland, Berkeley, Freemont, Marin, Hayward Sausalito, Tiberon or any of our fine Bay Area cities. Fremont might seem to make the most sense because of the deaf school there but I think San Francisco would be a more fun destination and more of a draw and it is an easy drive from Fremont (or even a BART (public transport train) ride) so no one need miss out.

I have a big garden and would be happy to hold a Kei-style open party for all ST fans . . . .

I would vote for Fremont,
Here is why:
California School for the Deaf
Blacow Elementary School (the first one to have an ASL club) Bobcat talking Hands Club,
Bart comes from most areas in the bay area,
Our friends in Vacaville, Valejo and Sacramento are within 1 - 2 hours drive.

However if ST is anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area, We will be there.

We would most graciously welcome Rachel back to Massachusetts. My son and I live in Dedham, MA and read of her visit to MA on ST's website recently and are sorry to have missed her. Two weeks ago, our cable access PBS station started airing Signing Time and friends and family are tuning in because they see my 16 mo. old son signing and want to join the fun. When the time is right Rachel, come back! In the meantime, we'll keep spreading the word and joyfully partner with you in the fulfilling your dream for all hearing impaired and for all the little ones like my son who now have a means to share their excitement at having a "voice"!

CT is great because you can travel anywhere in CT within two hours, and almost smack dab in the middle is ASD (American School for the Deaf in Hartford... the first Deaf school in America).

Or NYC... great draw because there are "locally" a handful of fabulous Deaf schools (in or within an hour from the city), lots of Deaf adult education programs, lots of Deaf community involvement and a wonderful interpreter training program:

-Mill Neck School for the Deaf, Long Island
-Cleary School (LI? I'm not very familiar with this one... it may be more oral)
-St Francis School for the Deaf, Bronx
-St Joseph's School for the Deaf, Brooklyn
-Lexington School for the Deaf, Queens (my husband's alma mater)
-JHS 47, NYC
-Fanwood, NY School for the Deaf, White Plains (Westchester)

-LaGuardia Community College (ITP/interpreter training program and PDA/program for Deaf adults), Queens
-Nassau Community College, LI
-Hunter College, NYC
MORE..... (what am I forgetting??)

There's also an annual Deaf Awareness Day (which is a big event) at South Street Seaport (Pier 17), NYC every August/September (one day, usually a Sunday) where they have booths promoting Deaf awareness through agencies, services, products, instructional material, educational material (I saw ST being sold for the first time by a vender last year)... and live entertainment (Deaf friendly).

Another huge Deaf annual event is the apple festival at Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf in gorgeous Oyster Bay, LI every October (both sat and sunday). Big BBQ/fall foods (apple strudels, corn on the cob, funnel cake, carmel apples....), vendors, arts and crafts, kiddie games, and Deaf friendly entertainment all day on stage (in shifts!).... very fun.

The apple festival is more kid-friendly (as it's held on the huge lawn of Mill Neck Manor, rather than NYC) but both events are very well attended. I like the apple fest more for my son because I don't have to hold his hand the entire time :)

FLORIDA....warm weather, Disney World is not far from Tampa Bay, we have the beach and did I mention the warm weather. Hasn't a late cold front hit the northern states recently...well cooler weather has hit Tampa Bay, so our highs are now in the low 70's.
There are two colleges with interpreting programs in the Tampa Bay area, and a large deaf population too.

Come to Tampa Bay Florida!

Since I'm very new to the idea of forums, maybe I should have read all posts before writing so I am not duplicating an idea??
I work as a teacher in Oakley CA and our district has new Deaf and Hard of Hearing classes. In actuallity, most students are children with special needs that use signing as their main form of communication. I think it would be a great opportunity to get more families familiar with Signing Time. :-)

We have a local PBS station airing Signing Time, and Six Flags Marine World is having Deaf Awareness Day on August 19, 2006, a Saturday. It is located in the northern part of the San Francisco Bay Area, and so it would be closer to the Sacramento crowd. Rachel and friends could come and do some shows at the park and also enjoy themselves while they aren't performing.

On Friday, if you wanted to do another show in this area, we could look into doing a show at the California School for the Deaf in Fremont. My ASL teacher is one of the outreach specialists there. This could be a fun "Deaf Awareness Day Kick Off." I'm sure Sherry's ASL club would love to have something so close to them.

I have asked my mom if it would be all right to have people stay with them, and she said they might be willing to have house guests for a few days. She has a 10,000 square foot home, complete with swimming pool, water slide, raquet ball court, pool table, ping pong, pinball, and even a Steinway. Also, my dad was in the Brasil mission at the same time as Grandpa Lex, if he wanted to come out I'm sure Dad would like that too.

Just let me know what I need to do to have my dream come true. :D

My son Maxwell has been such a fan since birth. My sister is a speech therapist and introduced us to your videos. We have three different versions and he loves them all. We then shared how this worked for our son and several of his friends also now love the videos and are actively using all the signs.
We have a local bookstore called the Symposia in Hoboken, NJ that often has these events I am sure that they would be willing to host your appearance and I would be willing to help make the arrangements. Thanks for being such a constant in our daily routines and for the joy of signing that you have shared with our family.

Be sure to contact your local public television stations and ask them to air Signing Time. Especially you Texans... we've already been to Lubbock, Austin and Houston - since they are airing Signing Time. Contact your stations, call, email and write to them and please encourage your friends and family members to do the same. It DOES make a difference - our fans have got us on the air in HI and NC and countless other areas.

When it comes to Public television, you DO have a voice and your voice is heard!

We could really use your help in encouraging New York City, Minneapolis, Virginia and Sacramento/Fresno as well.

Thank You!!!

Massachusetts, of course! tee hee We had such a BLAST when ST! came to Charlemont that I think it needs to be an annual event. And I'm sure Kei would agree with me! :D But, whether or not you come to MA again, I think it'd be nice to come back to the East Coast. It would give kids (who are too young to fly to Utah) a chance to meet you all. I also agree with the mom who wrote about coming to CT. My husband and I took a signing class before I had our son (4-28-06) and she had talked a lot about how big the deaf community is in CT because of the schools there. CT isn't that far from us, so I'd be game for going down there too!

I haven't heard ANYONE mention Oklahoma so guess I will have to put in my two cents worth. Just think Rachel, if you time your visit just right you might even get to experience a tornado! (just kidding)
The PBS station in Tulsa carries ST but we don't have it here in Norman yet. Would LOVE for you to come either to Tulsa or Oklahoma City or, most of all, Norman (which, by the way, is said to be protected from tornados). Oklahoma is a very nice place to visit, is centrally located and I know you have lots of fans here. Daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Jeff and grandchildren Taylor, Cameron and Kaylynne would ALL be so thrilled to see you again and I can hardly wait to meet you in person since I feel like you are already part of the family! We have the University of Oklahoma, Sam Noble Museum of Natural History, many different festivals and I work for Norman Public Schools so can help with contacts in that area. Bring Rebecca and Emilie and the kids and we can have a GREAT time! :D

No i was trying to read what you all were doing with the videos but wasn't quite sure! Hannah has hearing aids and I am just amazed on how she is picking up on the ST. She loves them! Emma watches as she plays but Hannah is glued to the TV when ST is on! She probable is doing about 10-15 signs already. Amazing. I am a neonatal nurse adn was going to try to encourage the ST with parents of our babies since alot of them have problems. I can't describe the feeling I had when I saw Hannah starting to sign... my eyes filled up with tears and my heart melted!

Our Springfield pbs station carries Signing Time so it'd be cool to have some outreach activity throughout Western MA. I'd have to see what kind of kids' events are coming up in this part of the state.

Poor Rachel! So many places, so little time... All good things to you and ST.

Not sure where in FL you want me to come, but I am scheduled to visit Sarasota FL in October.

The outreach events are scheduled in partnership with the PBS stations that are airing Signing Time. If we are not on the air in you area - THAT would be step one in the process of getting us out near you.

If we are on in your are - be in communication with your station(s) You can contact your station and thank them for showing Signing Time -
You ca request that they partner with Signing Time for an event in your community.
Let them know that YOU are willing to help get the word out as well in the parenting groups, schools etc. that you are already involved with.
Lastly -when you pledge to your station, or sign up for their Kids Club, that is another GREAT time to thank them for showing Signing Time.

Just a quick note, the latest posting about Rachel coming to Los Angeles to KCET (by the way, I'm so excited! I hope to be there!)

...but there is a little error on your post...it says in the first line of the announcment that it is for August 19th, then farther down, after the KCET link it says: Date: 9/19 ...and that would be September, I do believe. ;) Just wanted you to know so you can clarify!

I think it would be great for Rachel to go to any place were they are not very familiar with Signing Time. That way it would get peoples interest and maybe there local PBS station would start to show Signing Time.

I am planing on going to Muncie but it is a ways away. Anywere closer to the Detroit MI area would work for me.

Would love to see a Chicago appearance, and in that spirit I sent an online "letter" to Oprah this afternoon encouraging her to have Rachel on the show. Here is the transcript of what I sent:

Dear Oprah,

I am the lucky stay-at-home dad of two beautiful children, Jules - 4 1/2, and Hannah - 2 (tomorrow). They are both normal healthy kids who seem to be developmentally ahead of their respective peers. Jules' numeric, reading, and geographic skills appear to be several years ahead of his pre-school peers, and Hannah's conversational skills and mastery of complicated words and sentences are very advanced for a two-year-old.

I credit their development to many things, but surprisingly I think a great deal of credit must go to the producers of some of the TV programs they are allowed to watch. Sesame Street figured very prominently in their earlier development, and a relatively unknown program called "Signing Time (with Alex and Leah)" gets a great deal of credit as well.

The story behind the host, Rachel de Azevedo Coleman's development of this program is virtually tailor-made for an Oprah show. Rachel's two daughters, Leah and Lucy, are both challenged individuals. Leah is deaf and Lucy has Spina Bifida and Cerebral Palsy. By using ASL (American Sign Language) and developing "Signing Time," Rachel and her family have not only overcome some immense hurdles for both girls, but inadvertently helped many other children who are communication challenged for various reasons.

"Signing Time" occasionally airs on PBS, and it is the unique way that the program presents ASL (with pictures, signs, and songs) that has allowed it to resonate with many children who had previously struggled with or refused to learn ASL (or spoken language). I firmly believe that part of the reason my children communicate so well is that "Signing Time" stimulated their language skills in a way that isn't yet understood. It certainly was beneficial to us to be able to understand what the kids wanted when they were too young to speak -- sign language (in my opinion) should be a requirement for all young kids. It not only makes communication easier, but it enables normal kids like my own to more easilty interact with children who can't communicate any other way.

There is far more to this story than I can convey in this short space, and I would encourage you to check out their website, http://www.signingtime.com/ where you will learn much more about both the Colemans and about the many others whose lives have been positively impacted by their labor of love.

Respectfully,
Steve

Steve (Planecrazy),

What a great first post!!! I hope Oprah reads your letter and has Rachel and family on her show.

It is also so nice to hear from a stay at home dad.

Thanks, Lisa!

Like many others here I find it very easy (as an adult) to watch "Signing Time" over and over again without tiring of it. In fact, I am slowly learning basic ASL myself, though I definitely struggle by comparision to the sponges ... oops, I mean my kids! :D ;)

As an amatuer musician I also appreciate the depth and feeling that Rachel has put into her musical compositions. I have a ReplayTV DVR that auto-skips commercials, and it was only by accident that I turned it off and first heard "Shine" last week when the unit would have normally skipped over it at the end of the main program. That song brought tears to my eyes as I realized who she was singing about, and I definitely feel a genuine love for her children as I listen to it ... what a powerful song!

Oprah could do a LOT worse than profiling Rachel, her family, and the many others who have benefitted from "Signing Time."

Regards,
Steve

Our daughter of 2 years, Sari, absolutely LOVES Signing Time! We started her about 15 months ago on signing classes with a wonderful duo of women who came to our house for a 6-visit class, complete with flash cards and music. After that, we happened upon Signing Time one morning on PBS and its been a continuing education ever since.
Thanks to the wonderful DVR, we have episode after episode saved, and although we only let her watch a little TV at a time, this is one of her favorites (the other is Classical Baby on HBO Kids). She's been watching since a few months ago and it is just amazing to watch her vocabulary grow and her signing build as well. She can't yet say "Signing Time", so she points to the TV and says "Frog" (as in Hopkins)...sometimes instead of just randomly putting on an episode, I've often chosen one based on the lesson and how I'm doing with it rather than Sari!
To my point, PLEASE consider West Hartford, CT, as a stopping point! It is home to the renowned American School for the Deaf and I know the town would welcome Rachel and company with open arms!
Thanks,
Todd

We would LOVE to see Rachel and the Signing Time! gang in Anchorage, but recognize that's probably not realistic. I know how expensive it is to fly in and out of Alaska. Although summer is really beautiful up here!!

My other vote would be for the Mid-Atlantic (Eastern PA to Northern VA) in the beginning of August. Our family is traveling to Lancaster PA for the first 1/2 of August and we would travel anywhere on the Mid-Atlantic. Lancaster is 1 hour outside Philly and I have seen others requesting Philadelphia, Harrisburg, New Jersey, Washington DC Metro (VA and MD). We would travel to any of those locales to see you all in person. I wonder if we would have traveled the farthest to see Signing Time! in person?

Our local PBS will start showing ST! this month. I am so EXCITED! (and I can even sign that - which is so cool to me) Not too many people know about ST! up here yet, but we are getting the word out to all we meet. You and your program have been a life-saver for our family. My DD has DS and only says about 5 words that we can understand. But with ST! her signing has just flowered. And she gets so excited and happy when we understand what she wants and signs. Everytime I think of your songs like Caterpillar Dreams or Shine, they bring tears to my eyes. I never realized how much I took communication for granted till now. Thanks for sharing your talent and gifts. We hope to meet you some day in person.

We would LOVE for Rachel to come to the Dallas/Fort Worth area! I have an 11 month old daughter whose face lights up when she see Rachel's face and hears "Hi! I'm Rachel. Come join my friends..."

I also have a 2-year-old niece who has Down Syndrome. She has been signing since about 10 months. She was very lucky in that one of her grandmother's is an ASL interpreter. When my niece was about a year, we discovered Signing Time on our local PBS. Since then, my niece has been signing away. It's quite remarkable. She now attends a school in Fort Worth that is especially for children with Down Syndrome. Their toddler class has begun watching Signing Time to encourage more signing. :)

Since it is like PULLING TEETH to get anyone to come to Montana, :( and we are in the center of the state (pretty much) I would LOVE it if Rachel and the Signing Time Team came to GREAT FALLS, Montana! It is just up the Interstate from Salt Lake and it's an easy drive! :D

We have a couple different venues for Signing Time to perform in - the 1776 seat Mansfield Center for the Performing Arts and the Four Seasons Arena. My opinion, as a performer AND a parent, is The Mansfield Center for the Performing Arts, in the Civic Center. Much better acoustics and great seating for little ones!

One HUGE plus to being in the Mansfield Center for the Performing Arts? The Civic Center is right next door to the Children't Museum of Montana (CMOM) where kids waiting for performances can play! Really! All one needs to do is park, go to the CMOM and play, then go to see SIGNING TIME!!! It's PERFECT! After Signing Time the family can go to Gibson Park and play, feed the ducks, and chat - it would be a day for everyone to enjoy! Doesn't this sound like fun??? :)

And you all would be received with EXTRA Montana Love and all the charm only a Montanan can exude! :D

Hope to see you very soon!

The last time the ST! crew was up this way (in MA for shooting something?) I was unable to get the kids down there. But with some early warning, I am sure that they would love to see/meet everyone!

Just about anywhere in the New England area, Hartford, CT (home of ASD!), to Portland, ME (well, I dunno anything Deaf-related around there) are ~2 hour drives for me and likely worth the trip.

Just a suggestion, but could you write to and get family/friends to write to all the PBS stations to suggest they 1) If they aren't airing Signing Time! request that they do~ include your child's success w/ST
2) If they are, suggest they invite ST to put on a show at one of their PBS kids' events

Here in Cincinnati is St. Rita's school for the deaf. It is not publicly funded, but a small private school. This is an amazing place. Rachel's visit to Cincinnati could be a great promo for this one of a kind school. The school already gets great community support. They have a marvelous festival each year as a fund raiser. Then while you are here, perhaps you could visit our school which is about 5 or 6 miles away. We are using all of your videos for our first and kindergarten kids at Cincinnati Christian School. Actually, our kids keep looking for Lucy in all of the videos.
