Reading and Literacy

The building blocks for literacy begin developing during infancy through daily exposure to sounds, words, speech and print. The National Early Literacy Panel reviewed early literacy research and found that a young child’s ability to talk, listen and understand spoken and written words directly correlates to later literacy achievement in reading, writing and spelling. Now is the best time to build your baby’s literacy foundation. Start the habit while your child is an infant, so she will enjoy reading as she continues to grow. Her vocabulary will begin to grow as you read together. Toddlers can learn to read before they start elementary school. Spend at least 15 minutes a day reading with your child. When your child is young, read to your child. Talk about story and the pictures. As your child gets older, you should take turns reading a page, so your child grows accustom to reading.

Signing Time helps teach a child read and write before beginning school. Sign language promotes letter recognition and improves spelling skills. Our board books bundles Vol. 1-3 and Vol. 4-6 are perfect to share with your baby, toddler, or beginning reader—while encouraging reading and signing in a fun, interactive way.
