It’s Signing Time! Teaching ASL Signs for School
Research shows that when your students’ hands are moving, their minds are learning! This activity will help you teach ASL signs related to school.
- Review the school signs with your class. Learn them by watching Volume 13: Welcome to School or by printing these School Signs Flash Cards.
- Say and sign the poem “This is Our Teacher” from the Signing Time Classroom Edition. This is a great activity for the beginning of the day.
This is our TEACHER
This is our SCHOOL
This is our CLASS
Our CLASS is cool!
We are the STUDENTS
Who come here each DAY*
We’re ready to LEARN
And we’re ready to PLAY*
Ask your child to teach you some school signs from the School Signs Flash Cards.
Talk it out!
Engage your child in a conversation about school. Have them talk to you about their school day. Try to ask more than yes and no questions. Suggestions: What do you do first when you get to school? What is your favorite part of the day and why? Who do you play with at school?
Draw it out!
Using the “My School” worksheet, have your child draw his or her school and classmates. Encourage your child to take the picture to school and share with the class!
