NICK JR. TEACHES PRESCHOOLERS SIGN LANGUAGE WITH

NEW INTERSTITIAL MUSIC SERIES,

SIGNING TIME, BEGINNING WEDNESDAY, DEC. 9

NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2009 – Nick Jr., Nickelodeon’s 24-hour commercial-free, educational network, will premiere Signing Time, the network’s first interstitial music series dedicated to teaching sign language to preschoolers, on Wednesday, Dec. 9.  Three videos, starring Emmy-nominated Rachel Coleman, will be in regular rotation on Nick Jr. airing 1-2 times per day.  Two additional videos will air exclusively on Nickelodeon’s award-winning website, www.nickjr.com.

Signing Time reaches children with diverse learning styles and abilities by encouraging interaction through signing, singing, speaking and dancing.  The Signing Time series teaches American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary-building signs that are useful in daily life.

The videos airing on Nick Jr. include: “In a House,” which introduces the signs for different family members; “Feelings,” which teaches signs for feelings such as excited or scared and “Groove with Me,” which offers signs for activities such as jumping, swimming, dancing and running. NickJr.com will air these three videos in addition to two more exclusive music videos: “Leah’s Farm,” which presents the signs for animals and “A is for Alex and Alligator,” which teaches kids how to sign the entire alphabet.

Coleman co-created Signing Time as a means to teach children to communicate using American Sign Language (ASL).  As the mother of a daughter who is deaf, and another daughter with both cerebral palsy and spina bifida, sign language has played a central role in their family. Coleman has spent the last seven years making sign language fun and accessible for all children through the Signing Time series, which includes award-winning DVDs, music CDs, books, flashcards and a former public television show. Coleman, who is also a singer and songwriter, has written all the original songs featured in the series.  In 2008, Coleman was nominated for an Emmy in the category of Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series.

  6. I got home from a LONG day at work yesterday, walked in the door and my 3 year old was having a rough evening. I decided to just let him watch some wonderpets while I tried to cook, and turned on the tv. I got really confused!!!! I was like, no, this is cable, not the dvd player. What’s going on? I pressed all kind of buttons, scratched my head, and then suddnely it dawned on me…..Signing time ON Nick Jr!!!!! As soon as I realized it was actually on Nick Jr, I started jumping up and down yelling in excitement!!!!!!

    Congrats to you guys!!!

  7. OH MY GOSH!! I fell asleep last night watching a program on Nick Jr. with my four year old son, only to wake up to him screaming “Rachel is on TV mom, Rachel is on TV mom!!!!” So, I grabbed the remote, hit guide, it was Nick Jr. I know he can’t reach the dvd player and I was kind of out of it, BUT IT WAS YOU ON TV!!! This is a first for us. We are so excited for you!!! I hope many many families get the opportunity to experience what our family has with Signing time!!!
Rachel, thanks for writing me back over the summer about the sign for METEOR!!! I’m still reeling from that!! I still can’t believe you took the time to look into it for me and wrote me back!!
Happy Holidays and we can’t wait to watch you on Nick Jr.!!!!
    Warm Regards,
    The Lollobrigido Family

  8. This is such exciting news!!! My daughter’s preschool/kindergarten school decided to incorporate signing in their curriculum after seeing how much it helped my children to come out of their shells and to help the younger children communicate.

I will be forever grateful to Signing Time!!! I just tried looking up what time it will come on – and can’t find the info on Nick Jr or TV Guide. But I shall keep the faith and find it!

Congrats to you all. This is well deserved and I wish you all continued success!!!!

    Kerry

  9. Congrat Rachel and the signing time team, this is a big step for you. We love Nick Jr. and I know my son will love seeing “his signing time on TV along with his favorite shows. Thanks for all you do!

  10. For those who are asking for “times” to watch ST on Nick Jr. – this post is just to clarify.

What Nick Jr. is airing are called “Interstitials.” They are basically little informational segments (in our case, music videos from Signing Time that teach ASL.). They appear in between their regularly scheduled programs. The interstitials themselves are not part of their advertised schedule (just like you can pick up a TV Guide and find out when shows are airing, but in our case, it would be like looking for when *commercials* are airing!)

If you watched our shows on public television, you might be thinking that Nick Jr. is airing our shows as part of their regular programming, which is not the case.

So – it’s like watching for your favorite commercial. 😉 There are no scheduled times. Just watch Nick Jr., or go to their website and hopefully you’ll catch a glimpse of Signing Time!

We are excited for the potential exposure this will give us! Thanks for your enthusiastic support!

  11. Signing Time rocks wherever it is seen! This is great exposure….I’ll be watching Nick Jr. today for sure with my 15 month old grandson, hoping to catch a glimpse of an interstitial (I learned a new term here) starring Rachel, Alex and Leah. Interstitial today…..regularly scheduled show next???? Way to go Signing Time! We Love YOU!

  12. I’m so excited to see a main stream company see the benefit of signing!! I have been waiting a LONG time for this to come! I hope they see the benefit and go all the way for an entire show! They have several shows that teach so little and more that they play multiple times, they could put Signing Time on, and benefit so many!

  13. Last night Nick Jr. was on tv and all of a sudden…. there you were! We all thought someone hit the remote and turned on one of the DVD’s. We all did a happy dance to know you were back on tv! As my husband said… “God is sooo Good!”

  14. I cannot find it on Nick JR schedule on the website. What time it is? I missed it today. will Nick JR has signing time again next week. PLEASSSSSSSSSE Let me know.

    My daughter loves Signing time.

  15. Bird, in response to your question, please refer to my earlier comment made on 09 Dec 2009 at 11:52 am. It is not a regularly scheduled program on Nick Jr.; they are airing Interstitials. Short clips here and there, between the regularly scheduled programs.

There are also a few that can be viewed at Nick Jr. website under the Featured Video Picks: http://www.nickjr.com/video/index.jhtml

If you love Signing Time, you don’t have to wait for it to be on TV. Every episode is available on DVD at http://www.signingtime.com. !

  16. Like all of you we are so darn happy!!!!! I can’t even say how cool, great and awesome this is. I hope the response is so good they decide to add more. There are so many to choose from, three is just not enough!!!! Go Nick Jr.

  17. My husband and I were so excited when we heard the song for the first time on nick jr. We are so HAPPY. Our son (2 1/2 years old) loves signing time. Any chance that the show would also air on nick jr?

  18. The look on my 3yr old daughters face when she saw Rachel on NickJr was amazzing! She was thrilled! She danced around the room and was in a fantastic mood! We love it! Thankyou!!!!

  19. My daughter (2.5) was sooo excited to see Rachel on Nick Jr! She wanted to keep watching but I had to explain that it was only a song “Groove with Me”…not the whole show. I really hope they decide to air the whole series. We had almost every show on our DVR…but sadly we now have DirecTV and lost everything when we turned in our box. I have a son (6 mos) and I hope to teach him to sign. My daughter has an extensive vocabulary and everyone comments on how well spoken she is. I think Signing Time had a lot to do with her development. I just purchased the Baby Signing Time series for my son. Thank you and Congrats!

  20. YaY! im glad it on nickjr rachel your show is the best my son is 2.3 and he watched your show when he was an infant it wsa on demand on pbs im happy he loves you videos. next step is ur show on nickjr is would be great for all children i think

  21. Great news! I was blown away when I saw an “interstitial” today — and my son was thrilled!

So, congrats to the Signing Time team for this — I hope that it just continues to get bigger.

Do you think Nick Jr. may carry full episodes or interstitials in their “On Demand” section? Now THAT would be fantastic!

    Thanks for what you do!

    -Rich

  22. I’m so glad they are doing this!!! My daughter loves Signing Time and I can wait for my new born son can see it! I hope they air the shows, too.

  23. My son and his nurses learned sign language primarily through watching Signing Time. This is wonderful news.

  24. Wow, this is so weird. I was thinking for the past month I really really wish Signing Time was on Nick Jr. and while I was watching it the other day it was there! I couldnt believe it. I hope the butterfly song gets put on sometimes.

    WAY TO GO!! WOOHOO!!

  26. I’m so glad to see airing anywhere. Obviously the full shows would be better. The show as it aired on PBS helped helped us teach our son sign language – and verbalize – at a very early age.

  27. I started learning sign langauge when I was 10. I didn’t realize how valuable ASL is until I start babysitting for a family with a child with special needs. The child had Rubenstien Taybi Syndrome which made her speech delayed. Signing helped a lot when I didn’t understand what she was saying. Her and her younger sister would watch Signing Time. I learned SO many signs from this show! After reading Lucy’s story, I was astonunded at ASL. Not only does it help with special needs children as well as deaf, but ASL has also helped me, being a visual learner. I love ASL and thank Rachel for going out and making such a show. It has showed me how much I could learn from just one other language.

  28. I have two kids who are 3 and 4 and they LOVE the Signing Time videos on Nick Jr. I had never heard of the show before, but now I’m looking to buy the Signing Time dvd’s because the songs are fun and my kids and I love to try and sign along to the songs when they come on. I really hope sometime in the future Nick Jr. will decide to air the shows!

  29. loved your blog entry about your new years themes and christmas card “try”… totally made me cry and want to be more loving to my husband!! thank you for your inspiration… and your humor!! i have to thank you as well, for making these dvd’s.. i have some and my daughter won’t sit through any other show – she loves you and the wonderful way you have taught her to communicate!! She is 22 months old and is miles ahead of others her age and I know it is because of her ability to understand what we are saying to her!! Thank you thank you! i am sure you are crazy busy all the time – just like all moms – but to do this on top of that, you must be so proud of yourself!! Now… I gotta go find out what time your on nick jr.. thank you!! Happy 2010!!!!

  30. I miss having the show on the PBS station. Glad to see you up on Nick Jr but it’s not enough time!!! One day hopefully you will be back or full shows on Nick Jr. Warm regards!

  31. I have been teaching my daughter to sign since she was 5 months & now at 21 months, we absolutely can’t get enough of the Signing Time videos! I am trying to get a local mom’s group together…I know I can’t be the only one who believes this is a wonderful tool to help our children communicate! Especially at such an early age when they aren’t able to express themselves. We sign daily & feel if anything, it has helped her vocabulary now she is talking.

Thank you for being such a great inspiration Rachel & family!

  33. My 1 year old saw “Feelings” and started moving her hands, as if she was trying to sign! Now we play it and use the sign language with her! She loved to sign the word “grumpy”! 🙂

  34. I know that I’m a little late on this, but I have been seeing Rachel on Nick Jr. and I love it. I know a little ASL, but I just found out today that my youngest son is hearing impaired, he “hears” certain tones and sounds, but not to the extent that he should be hearing. I really and truly hope that Nick Jr. starts airing the show as opposed to just the music “videos”. My whole family is on board with learning ASL, and this would complement us learning, nicely.

  35. I enjoy you because of your whole effort on this website. My daughter enjoys conducting internet research and it’s really easy to understand why. Many of us notice all relating to the lively method you produce invaluable secrets through the website and as well as increase contribution from website visitors on this topic so our favorite daughter is now starting to learn so much. Take pleasure in the rest of the new year. Your performing a glorious job.
