School Age Children

Sign language can help a young child excel in academics. Hearing children benefit from Signing Time because it supports early brain development. Research shows that babies who use sign language scored 8-12 points higher than their non-signing peers, when tested after second grade. Teaching your school-age child ASL has the same cognitive benefits as exposing your child to an oral foreign language. Sign language for kids is beneficial for children because it builds literacy skills, improves spelling skills, enhances memory retention and fosters a love of learning. Young children who use sign language often have better self-esteem, fewer temper tantrums and larger IQs. Build strong family bonds as you sign together within your own home.

Signing Time uses signs from American Sign Language, rather than made up signs. Learning is fun and interactive because all Signing Time materials employ a multi-sensory approach, which draws upon the senses: visual (sight), auditory (hearing) and tactile (touch). Many teachers only take advantage of one or two of these senses when teaching. However, employing the sense of touch assists children in remembering information by giving their brains tactile input to draw upon in addition to the information that was heard and seen. This type of teaching approach provides children with diverse learning styles and abilities additional support when learning. Signing Time understands that each and every child is unique and therefore supports a multi-sensory approach, which has proven to be a successful modality for typical and atypical children alike.

My First Signs teaches sign language for many “first words.” Your child will learn to express she would like to eat. She can tell you she is thirsty for milk. She will also learn to identify family members like mom, dad, and baby, as well as many other objects in the world around her. Families, Fun and Feelings teaches the ASL vocabulary to describe feelings, identify family members and things around us. This DVD helps children express how they are feeling rather than letting keeping those emotions inside and letting them build up. ABC Signs will help your child learn letters. Rachel Coleman demonstrates each letter in the alphabet and reinforces them through song and movement.
