Many toddlers have tantrums because they lack the ability to clearly verbalize their needs and feelings. With sign language, toddlers they can express what they want or need instead of getting upset. Many parents who use Signing Time comment that the terrible twos are easier because their children can communicate instead of throwing temper tantrums. You do not need to be fluent in American Sign Language; even knowing a few signs can help can make communication clearer. Give your child choices and say the options as your sign them. Would you like milk or juice? Encourage your child to use words or sign language to express his feelings, rather than emotional outbursts. Sometimes frustration is unavoidable but you can teach your child how to deal with frustration in a calm manner.
