Dust in Sign Language

Learn how to sign dust in ASL (American Sign Language) and encourage even young children to help out with this simple household chore.

1. Bring one hand up about chest height, palm down. Fingers are in a light fist, with the thumb resting on the side of the hand (not tucked under).
2. Start with the hand diagonal across the body and move it in a circular motion across to the other side.

Teaching Tips – to learn how to sign dust in ASL

  • Preschool learning comes alive with real-life activities. Dusting is a simple and safe chore your child can take on early – at least for the furniture down low! Provide a rag or dust cloth to your child and help them dust, practicing the sign together.
  • Make cleaning a little more fun by lifting your child to higher and hard to reach places and swooping them around on the way down. Who says you can’t giggle and have fun with chores? Just practice dust as you go!
