Feelings in Sign Language

Learn how to sign feelings. This important sign can help young children express emotion in a constructive way.

1. With your palm flat and facing towards you, keep your fingers outstretched and angle your middle finger down closer to you than the others.
2. Brush your middle finger over your heart a couple of times.
3. Your feelings are felt in your heart! Use this visual to help you remember the sign.
4. This sign is the same as the one for feel, but we’ve provided different teaching tips for both.

Teaching Tips

• Create learning activities for children with a hand-made coloring book offeelings. On each page, label an emotion for your child. Have them draw a picture of a face showing that feeling. Talk about the different feelings and use the sign as you go.

• Talk with your child about different times they experience certain feelings. Say something like, “Tell me about your feelings when we go somewhere special!” Or, “Tell me about your feelings when your brother takes your toy.” Help your child to understand and express in constructive ways all about their feelings!
