Office in Sign Language

Learn how to sign office in ASL (American Sign Language). Does anyone in the house go to work in an office?

  1. First make an O-shape with both hands (just connect the fingertips of each hand!).
  2. Next show the walls, first the front and back walls by bending your arms so they are parallel to your body and to one another.
  3. Then show the side walls by extending both hands in front of you, elbows bent.
  4. This sign looks a little like a square room, and you know it is an office because O is for office! Use this visual and cue to help you remember the sign.

Teaching Tips – to learn how to sign office in ASL

  • Is there an office you can visit? Maybe the office of a family member, friend, or even an in-home office. Practice signing office while you and your child observe all the things you might find in a busy office.
  • Imaginative play in early childhood education is so important. Set up an area with a play office. Encourage your child to pretend to be busy at work with whatever they think goes on in an office. Sign office!
