Sky in Sign Language

Learn how to sign sky in ASL (American Sign Language). What’s up there to discover?

  1. Cross one arm over the front of your body, angling the forearm and keeping the hand flat and above your head to one side.
  2. Arc the hand back across the body so it ends up on the other side pointing straight up.
  3. This sign looks like you are showing the big sky above you. Use this visual to help you remember the sign.

Teaching Tips – to learn how to sign sky in ASL

  • There are beautiful clouds in the sky and with a little imagination you can see shapes of familiar things there. Read the book “It Looked Like Spilt Milk” together and then go outside and see what you can discover in the sky! Practice your signs as you go!
  • Activities for children that let them get as hands on as possible help reinforce concepts – including signs! Provide a piece of blue construction paper for sky. Add in supplies that your child could use for things found in the sky, such as cotton balls for clouds, glitter for rain, or a yellow button for the sun. Have him create his sky picture and sign sky while he tells you all about it!
