Stamp in Sign Language

Learn how to sign stamp in ASL (American Sign Language). If you put a stamp on a letter, where will you send it to?

  1. Hold one hand out with the pointer and middle finger extended and the rest of the fingers tucked into the palm.
  2. With your other hand, hold it in the same shape (pointer and middle finger out). Pretend to lick the pointer and middle finger and then place them against the fingers on the first hand.
  3. This sign looks like you are licking a stamp and then pressing it to a letter. Use this visual to help you remember the sign.

Teaching Tips – to learn how to sign stamp in ASL

  • Choose a friend or family member that would enjoy getting a letter. They don’t have to live far away – just across town works too! Tuck the letter into an envelope and affix a stamp. Sign stamp while you get it ready!
  • Educational games based on mimicking the adult world can teach children a lot about how to navigate life. Set up a pretend post office and provide stickers to serve as stamps (much more economical!). Provide time to write letters and consider a class or family mailbox to leave notes in.
