Kids Participate in Earth Day

Simple Ways to Help our Kids Participate in Earth Day

Earth Day is coming up on April 22! This is a great time to teach our kids about taking care of our world. The official 2025 theme is about sustainable energy. While we won’t be solving that issue with our preschoolers, we can still find simple ways to help kids participate in Earth Day. Signing Time has several resources that can help too!

We’ve got some super easy ways to get your kids thinking about our world and how we can care for it. In our free coloring pages, there are pages about grass, flowers, the rainbow, clouds, rain, and the sun. These are easy to download, print, and use to open conversations about the Earth, how nature works, and how we can take care of it.

And in our Handy-craft list, we have a section for Earth Day with crafts and a coloring page – all free for you to download. Just scroll down the page until you get to the Earth Day activities.

At My Signing Time, we have several shows to help your kids learn about Earth Day. You can check them out here. And our show What if Everybody Did It? is free to watch!

Looking for something more global to participate in? Take a look at the Earth Day website. They even have a way to search for events and activities near you, and they have quizzes and fact sheets to help you learn more.

Simple Ideas to get your kids thinking

Our kids aren’t going to unify around renewable energy right now, but we can work on smaller initiatives with them, so that someday, they might be the ones who come up with good solutions for our planet.

Wastefulness

One way to help our kids become more aware of limited resources is to help them become aware and concerned about wastefulness. Whether it’s food waste, unused toys, clothing to pass along, or how much we throw away, we can find a way to consider our wastefulness. Let’s teach our kids how to be wise about donating and reusing. Feeling brave? Maybe this Earth Day could be a day that we concentrate on not wasting food – something most of us parents are already trying to teach our little ones.

Litter awareness

Cleaning up trash is something most kids can understand and get into. Before heading out to the park or even for a shopping trip, consider adding some gloves and a trash bag to your bag. That way, if your family comes across some litter, you can do something about it. Or maybe on Earth Day, you could take your kids through your neighborhood to clean up litter. Let’s raise kids who don’t drop their trash anywhere. Instead, let’s teach them to take action and clean it up when they see it.

Energy consumption

Here’s another thing many of us parents are already working on with our kids (turn off the lights!). But framing it as a way to care for our world may help our kids to see it differently. The official theme for Earth Day 2025 is focused on renewable energy. So it’s a great time to help our kids see this small way they can conserve energy. When they help our homes use less energy, they are helping with energy issues for everyone.

So, let’s find simple ways to help kids participate in Earth Day. It’s OK to do something big, and it’s OK to do something simple. Either way, we are helping our kids understand how we need to take care of this world.
