Rachel Coleman, Host of Signing Time, to Appear at the OKC Buddy Walk

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA – August 1, 2008 – Rachel Coleman, Emmy-nominated host of Signing Time!, will perform at the local Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma (DSACO) Buddy Walk on September 20, 2008 from 11:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark, located at 2 South Mickey Mantel Drive in Oklahoma City.

Coleman, who co-created Signing Time to teach children to communicate using American Sign Language (ASL), has seen firsthand the miracles that can come from using sign language. As the mother of a daughter who is deaf, and another with cerebral palsy and spina bifida, Coleman has spent the last few years making sign language fun and accessible for all children through the Signing Time series with DVDs, music CDs, books, flashcards and a public television show.

The goal of the Buddy Walk is to celebrate National Down Syndrome Awareness month in October and promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. People with Down syndrome invite “buddies” to walk with them, and buddies can be anyone from friends and family to teachers, coworkers and politicians. The DSACO’s Buddy Walk will include a one-mile walk in which anyone can participate without special training.  There will be activities for children of all ages including clowns, face painters, balloon artists and special entertainment with Rachel Coleman. Coleman will use songs, signs and group interaction to help hundreds of families experience the power of communication through sign language.

Signing Time offers an unparalleled multi-sensory approach to teaching children how to communicate using ASL. It reaches children with diverse learning styles and physical abilities, and encourages interaction through signing, singing, speaking and moving, Signing Time has become the largest library of entertaining signing videos of its kind and can be viewed on PBS stations around the country.
