Signing Turns Your Child’s Brain On

All of our children have normal hearing and don’t have any behavior or physical conditions. But we wanted to communicate early with our babies, and give them the tools to communicate with us.  And it worked!

When our first daughter was about 6 months old, we introduced her to the first volume of Baby Signing Time. She loved the show and began signing to us. We also signed multiple things to her.  By the time she was 1 year old, she could sign 50 words. Over the next few months, she learned 100 more! We were so impressed. It really helped us know what she needed, and we could tell her what was going on. She began reading when she was 2 years old and has been advanced in her reading, math, and memory abilities ever since. She is currently in 3rd grade, in a self-contained gifted classroom. We are so proud of her.

A very similar story happened with our second daughter. She also loved to sign and began learning to read very early. By the time both of these daughters were finished with preschool, they were reading the Junie B. Jones books. This second daughter is now in 1st grade, also in a self-contained gifted classroom. She is reading at a 4th-5th-grade level, and her spelling is at Junior high level!  Their school allows children to advance to higher reading and math levels while remaining in the same grade as their age. It is the perfect school for their advanced abilities.

Our third daughter is currently in her first year of preschool and is already starting to read. She can speak extremely well and can memorize lots of things.

I am certain that learning to sign as babies and toddlers helped my daughters learn to read, memorize, and even dance better. I like to joke that signing “turned their brains on”, and perhaps made them more aware of things around them, at an earlier age.

I am so grateful for Rachel Coleman’s work and care to bring these programs to all families. It made a world of difference in our family and I am so grateful to have had it during those younger years especially.  We also enjoy the Potty time and Treeschoolers programs.  Keep up the great work!  And THANK YOU!!!
