Ghana 2012: A Change in Perspective (Pablo’s Story)

by Pablo Martos, Certified Signing Time Academy Instructor Somehow, I convinced a remarkable young woman to marry me nine years ago, and she went around being remarkable until someone invited her to go to Ghana. I tagged along. It started when a friend gave us some DVDs featuring an overly chipper woman in orange to help us communicate with our developmentally delayed son. Since then, my wife has started training to be an ASL interpreter, and has worked for Rachel in a number of capacities. I tended to be involved in some of the larger projects she did for the …

Ghana: The Little Changes Make the Biggest Difference

By Carissa Martos: Certified Signing Time Academy Instructor and Signing Time Foundation Academy Outreach Coordinator Going to Ghana as an interpreting student, I experienced the same culture shock surrounding poverty as the others (Rachel, Pablo, Ronai, Jen, Aaron and the girls) have noted, as well as the lack of in interpreting services and limits to what Deaf children are able to achieve in the current structure, and the misconceptions and prejudices that are rampant in the country. Then I remembered that the concept of Deaf education only came to Ghana in 1957, when Andrew Foster established the school that would …

Ghana 2012: Moments of Magic (Ronai’s story)

by Ronai Brumet, Signing Time Academy Master Instructor They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and that’s good, because I have a thousand pictures and I’m having a hard time coming up with words that can adequately describe the experience that I had in Ghana. I was privileged enough to go with an amazing group of people that included my 14 year old daughter, Ellie. I, of course, was worried, as I think any mother would be, about how she would handle all of the change. Ellie is kind of shy until she warms up to a …

Rachel made these quilts – and you can bid on them!

When Rachel returned from Ghana in 2008, she brought home some beautiful fabrics from different cities in Ghana: Accra (the capital), Mampong (where the School for the Deaf is located), and Aburi. Rachel used the fabrics to create three beautiful quilts, which are being auctioned on eBay to help support Signing Time Foundation’s Operation Ghana 2012 with Signs of Hope International. The funds will be used to help deaf children in Ghana attend the School for the Deaf where they can learn sign language. The quilt auction ends on January 12th. Why Ellie is Going to Ghana

Why I want to go to Ghana – by Ellie Brumett (age 14) I want to go to Ghana because it’s a good experience. I also want to improve the lives of the deaf kids in Ghana as much as I can. I have been interested in Sign Language ever since I was little. My mom taught me a lot and so did Signing Time. It was very cool in 2005 when I met Leah Coleman at the Signing Time Family Camp. We became instant friends. As our friendship has developed over the years so have my signing abilities. Having …

The Kids Speak Out!

Before the last trip to Ghana, Leah did an interview where she explained that when she grew up, she wanted to be a writer as well as a teacher of the Deaf in Africa.  She explained why she was going, and what she hoped she could change for those children.  The interview is as relevant to the upcoming trip in 2012 as it was back then: [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fG9LX3G63lQ&version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0] Rory, the daughter of Carissa Martos, the Foundation’s Academy Outreach Coordinator, also wanted to explain why her parents were heading to Africa, and what they hoped to accomplish there.  Rory’s too young …

Operation Ghana Blog Click Image to Enlarge I am happy to report that The Signing Time Team all returned safely home from Africa. The experience is one that I will likely never get over. It changed me. The deaf children we met and spent time with are beautiful.

I Am Grateful

I am Grateful! by Alex from Signing Time Last January I went to the city of Accra in Ghana, Africa. I felt thankful for things I had never really thought about before. In Accra, there isn’t a good trash removal system. Instead, people put their garbage in a bag, set it on the street, and set fire to it. All the fires made the air smoky. I realized how thankful I was for a garbage system and clean air. Where we stayed in Ghana, if I wanted a hot shower, I took water from the well (the water was not …
