Pajamas in Sign Language

Learn how to sign pajamas in ASL (American Sign Language) – do you have a favorite pair?

1. This is a two part sign. First you sign sleep. Do this by holding your hand up over your face, palm open. Then pull your hand down just slightly while closing your hand so all your fingertips touch. Close your eyes at the same time.
2. Next, sign clothes. Do this by bringing both hands up to about your shoulders, palms facing in and fingers together. Brush your hands down a few inches a couple of times.
3. This sign combines sleep and clothes – your sleep clothes are your pajamas! Use this cue to help you remember the sign.

Teaching Tips – to learn how to sign pajamas in ASL

  • Have a silly pajamas night! Switch PJs with someone else in the family, wear them inside out, or come up with your own silly variation. Take some fun pictures and practice the sign!
  • Signing with baby can be a fun part of your everyday routine, long before it seems she can understand or sign back. Each morning, sign clothes and get dressed, and each evening sign pajamas. In time, she’ll respond to these cues and know her day is beginning or it is nearing time for bed.
